Joshua Shelton's 46.93 Leads Seven Sub-48 In Texas 400m

Texas High School Indoor Championship 2026

The boys' 400 meters at the Texas High School Indoor Championships lived up to its billing as one of the marquee races of the weekend, delivering elite performances from the opening heat through the final section. Coming off a historically fast 2025 outdoor season, many of Texas' top returning quarter-milers were expected to throw down early-and they did exactly that on Friday night. As noted in the meet preview, this race had the potential to separate itself from the rest of the program, and by the end of the night the numbers told the story: eight boys under 48 seconds and another 10 dipping below 49.0 in the first full meet of the season.

The fireworks began immediately in heat one, which ultimately proved to be the fastest race of the night. Joshua Shelton of APXP Speed Development asserted himself from the gun, reaching the 200 meters in 21.67 and never relinquishing control. Shelton powered home in 46.93, the fastest time of the meet and a clear statement that his late-season 2025 form has carried directly into the indoor campaign. Behind him, the race remained tightly packed, with Keaton Washington (47.60), Christian Witcher (47.80), and Charvis Tubbs (47.96) all producing sub-48 efforts. Witcher's aggressive opening 200 in 21.76 contrasted with Washington's more controlled approach, while Tubbs showed his trademark of having a nose for being in the fastest races.

The quality didn't stop there. In a later heat, Charles Anderson, the UIL 4A state meet 800m runner-up, who also ran 46.44 over the summer delivered one of the most efficient races of the meet, splitting 22.31-25.11 to run 47.42, securing second overall and reinforcing his status as one of the most reliable long sprinters in the state. Andrew Jones, the UIL 6A gold medal-winning hurdler, followed with a smooth 47.85, while fellow long hurdler Brycen Martin continued his breakout trajectory by dipping under 48 with a 47.89, using his speed-endurance background to great effect. Heat four added even more depth, as Emaurie Jones (48.06) and Esteban Avena (48.07) went nearly stride for stride through the finish, both closing strong after controlled first laps.

By the time the dust settled, the boys' 400 meters had produced one of the deepest results lists ever seen at a Texas indoor opener. With championship-caliber splits, contrasting race styles, and a wave of sub-48 performances, the event not only validated the preseason hype-it set a tone for what could be a special year for Texas quarter-miling.
