Alexandra Montgomery crosses the 800m mark of the Girls' 2-mile
The girls' 2-mile on Saturday morning at the Texas High School Indoor Championships at Texas A&M University delivered one of the most surprising and impressive distance performances of the weekend.
If there was a clear favorite entering the race, Alexandra Montgomery wasn't universally pegged as the winner, but by the time the field reached the final laps, she had flipped expectations on their head. Montgomery ran with poise and confidence throughout, closing strongly to take the win in 10:44.76, a time that marked a significant step forward from where she finished last track season and underscored her steady upward trajectory.
From the opening kilometer, Montgomery established herself at the front, passing 818 meters in 2:40.94 and hitting the mile in 5:27.13, setting a controlled but honest pace. Arkansas standout Hadassah Beshears stayed within striking distance throughout, matching Montgomery through the middle stages as both athletes reached 2418 meters in just over 8:10. The separation came over the final half mile, where Montgomery found another gear, closing in a sharp 2:34.45 to seal the victory. Beshears fought all the way to the line for second in a personal-best 10:47.19, a major improvement over her previous 11:05 mark and a strong way to open her season.
Behind the lead duo, Brooke French (Randall) delivered another steady championship performance, finishing third in 11:15.98. The UIL 4A all-state runner and proven state meet performer showed her trademark consistency, while Montgomery's Bridgeland teammate Marianna Salazar placed fourth in 11:20.77, giving the Bears two top-four finishers. The remainder of the top 10 showcased depth across classifications, with athletes like Lilia Flo, Rafaela Olivarez, and Ella Narhi all battling through the later stages as the pace began to take its toll.
For Montgomery, the win was a clear sign of growth. After posting a 5:10.17 in the 1600 and 11:23.86 in the 3200 last season, and playing a key role in Bridgeland's UIL 6A cross country state title, this performance represented a meaningful breakthrough on the track. For Beshears and French, the race confirmed they remain among the state's top distance talents. All told, the girls' 2-mile set a high bar for the indoor season and reminded everyone that early-season distance racing can still produce statement performances.
