Noble Relays Underway

The 38th Annual ASU/David Noble Relays opened Thursday as the heptathlon and decathlon took center stage at the LeGrand Sports Complex. The multi-event will continue Friday before the open meet takes place Saturday.

South Plains' Stormy Smothers took the lead after day one in the decathlon as he tallied 3,441 points through five events. Smothers took the lead after leap of 6-5 in the high jump and ended the day with a win in the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.23. The Rams have three freshmen in the decathlon as Junior Carrasco sits fourth (3,196), freshman Hewitt Holmes fifth (3,060) and Robert Malczewski ninth (2,943).

On the women's side, Christina Barrett leads from New Mexico Junior College leads after the first day of competition with 2,677 points through four events. ASU sophomore Cathryn Rittenberry is in second place with 2,608 while NMJC's Aleese Pittman is third with 2,531 points. Rambelle junior Kris Crockett is in fourth with 2,500 points.

The decathlon continues Friday with the final five events starting at 1 p.m. The final three events of the heptathlon will begin at 2 p.m.
