ASU owns Noble Relays

The Angelo State men's and women's track & field teams celebrated throughout the day as the Rams and Rambelles easily claimed the team titles at the 38th Annual ASU/David Noble Relays. The three-day competition concluded Saturday at the LeGrand Sports Complex.

The Rambelles more than doubled the point total of their nearest compete as they tallied 271 points while the Rams collected 208 points to pull away for their team crown. The women grabbed 12 event title while the men won 11 events. Texas A&M-Kingsville placed second in the women's team standings (108) with Tarleton State third (95). On the men's side, TSU placed second (145) and TAMUK was third (99).

Senior Aisha Adams highlighted the day for the Rambelles as she set school record with a time of 57.94 in the 400-meter hurdles. Adams bested her old ASU record of 58.77 set last season. Her time is an automatic-qualifying mark for next month's NCAA Division II National Championships and was also a new meet and track record. Adams also automatically qualified in the triple jump, winning the event with a leap of 40-10.25.

The Rambelles took both the 100- and 200-meter dashes Saturday with junior Makayla Myers claimed the 100 (12.26) and senior Celethia Byrd winning the 200 (24.02). Senior Brittney Heath grabbed two titles, winning both the 1,500-meter run (4:44.76) and the 5,000-meter run (18:46.85). Senior Chrystal Ruiz placed second in the 100-meter hurdles and improved her provisional mark with a time of 14.02 in the prelims. The Rambelles took a title in both the 4x100-meter relay (48.06) and 4x400-meter relay (3:46.02).

In women's field events, senior Andria Nussey won the long jump as she improved her previous provisional-qualifying mark with a leap of 19-8.25. Sophomore Cathryn Rittenberry placed second in the triple jump behind Adams with a leap of 37-10.75, provisionally qualifying her for next month's national  meet. Sophomore Jayda Spencer won both the discus (144-6) and hammer throw (132-0) with season bests in both events. Her toss in the discus provisionally qualified her for the national meet.

For the men, senior James Howell recorded the second-fastest time in the 400-meter dash as he won the event in a time of 46.47. He was just .04 shy of the one of the oldest records in the ASU men's record book, 46.43 held by Barry Samples (1983). Howell also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.14. His prelim time in the 200 is a new automatic mark for Howell.

Sophomore Nick Smith won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.50. Smith recorded a time of 10.45 in the prelims to improve upon his provisional mark. Smith also placed second in the 200, also improving his provisional  mark. Freshman Isidro Garcia placed second in the 400 behind Howell in a time of 47.05, provisionally qualifying him for the national meet.

Junior Sam Gallander won the 800-meter run in a season-best time of 1:56.43 while junior Brian Holik won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.76. The Rams claimed the title in the 4x400, recording a time of 3:10.84.

In men's field events, sophomore Jacob McDonald won the javelin throw and automatically qualified for the national meet with a throw of 211-0. Senior Andrew Crookham provisionally qualified in the shot put with a throw of 53-9.75 and then placed second in the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 155-8. Senior Wade Goode won the discus with a provisional throw of 172-6 while sophomore Nick Alejandro won the hammer with a season-best throw of 156-1. Freshman Mark Slone won the triple jump and provisionally qualified for the national meet with a jump of 48-11. Junior Tyler Orlando placed fourth in the pole vault, provisionally qualifying with a mark of 15-11.

The Rams and Rambelles return to action next week as they head to Waco for the Michael Johnson Classic, hosted by Baylor.
