Rams, 'Belles both top D-II

Both the Angelo State men's and women's track & field teams are ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, according to latest national poll released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Rambelles held on their top spot from a week ago by dominating the field at the 38th Annual ASU/David Noble Relays over the weekend, nearly tripling the point total of their nearest competitor. The ASU women boast the top performances in eight events this season and have already secured 11 automatic and 10 provisional marks for next month's NCAA D-II National Championships. The Rambelles, who earned 320.44 points this week, are one of just two teams from the Lone Star Conference in the poll, joined by No. 5 Abilene Christian (135.71).

Defending NCAA D-II women's champion Lincoln (251.34) moved up 14 spots to No. 2 in this week's poll, UC-San Diego (171.98) dropped one spot to No. 3 and Grand Valley State (138.48) leaped into the poll at No. 4.

On the men's side, the Rams jumped up from No. 5 last week to this week's top spot after claiming the team title at the Noble Relays. The ASU men, who earned 185.97 points in this week's poll, are one of four teams from the LSC in the Top 25 this week, joined by No. 6 Abilene Christian (139.73), No. 18 Tarleton State (64.64) and No. 21 Texas A&M-Kingsville (60.38). The Rams have five automatic performances and 11 provisional marks already this season. This past week, ASU collected three automatic marks and eight provisional marks at the Noble Relays.

Pittsburg State (177.92) moved up two spots to No. 2 this week while defending men's national champion St. Augustine's (147.82), last week's top team, dropped two spots to No. 3. Alaska-Anchorage (145.42) fell one spot to No. 4 and Chico State (145.27) dropped two positions to No. 5.

The next release of updated rankings will continue on Tuesday, April 23, with weekly updates leading to the NCAA D-II Outdoor National Championships to be held May 27-29 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Rams and Rambelles return to action this Saturday as they head to Baylor for the Michael Johnson Invitational hosted by Baylor.
