Texas Is Moving

Indoor rust is gone and statewide leaderboards are already shaking up.

With indoor season in the rearview and outdoor officially here, the Lone Star State is already cooking, and the early returns say this spring could get historic. Here's your statewide snapshot of who's heating up.

Boys Sprints

Christian Witcher wasted no time announcing himself to the country. His wind-aided 10.26 is currently US No. 1 all conditions this season.

Not to be outdone, Blake Hamilton ripped a 20.38 over 200m. A flat-out PR and a significant jump from his fastest 2025 mark of 20.91.

Then there's Ky-Ri Bonner, who might be the most versatile man in Texas right now. PRs across the board:

  • 10.77 in the 100m

  • 21.84 in the 200m

  • 46.73 in the 400m

That 46.73? Texas No. 1 in the quarter. And it's early.

Distance

The distance crew delivered one of the strongest single-meet statements of the season at the Burkburnett Boomtown Relays.

David Parsons leads the state in the 1600m with a sharp 4:07.95, the only sub-4:08 performance so far. Right behind him:

His 8:37.33 in the 3200m makes him the only Texan under 9:00 so far this season.

In the 800m, Eli Nettles sits atop the leaderboard with 1:52.87, a mark that already puts him in serious contention for a 6A state title.

For the hurdlers:

  • Andrew Jones, 13.42 in the 110H

  • Ian Hill, 36.90 in the 300H

Griffin Hummel clocked 6:14.07 at the Lake Travis Varsity Invitational in the 2K steeplechase, which is currently the US #1.

Boys Relays

When it comes to sprint relays, the Houston area is showing its speed depth.

Boys Field

Early returns in the boys' field events show the bar has been set high, as several marks already rank among the nation's top performances.

Micah Lockett cleared 7-1 in the high jump, matching what he jumped this past season. His outdoor best is 7-2.25 from Nike Outdoor Nationals last year. He's knocking on that door again.

Domonique Young opened his long jump campaign with a PR of 23-8.5. Meanwhile, Abdurahman Ghaji is the only Texan over 50 feet in the triple jump so far, landing at 50-1.5. A statement jump in any conditions. In the vault, Eric Rose has soared to 17-0.75.

Notable Throws:

Girls Track

Faith Ponds leads Texas at 11.15, but Avery Dalmyda is right there at 11.16. One hundredth of a second separates the top two spots.

In the 400m, McKenzi Roberson dropped a PR of 53.83, slicing well under her indoor best of 55.22 from earlier this year.

The 800m belongs, for now, to Sophia Sandoval, whose 2:14.21 PR leads a tight race that already features three girls under 2:15.

In the 3200m, Maya Easterwood ran 10:37.17, a great mark with district still more than a month away.

Despite the early calendar, Texas girls' relay squads are performing at a midseason level, delivering some of the fastest times in the country.

That time would have ranked US No. 5 last season.

  • Shadow Creek, 1:35.96 in the 4x200

That mark would have placed No. 14 nationally a year ago.

They're just a second and a half off their US No. 6 performance from last season.

Girls Field

Madalann Viloria cleared 5-8 in the high jump for a PR and the state lead. In the long jump, Madison Cuplin flew to 20-11, a massive PR and a mark that travels nationally. Jordyn Barron leads the triple jump at 40-5.

Noteworthy Throws:

  • Naila Ugoh, 159-3 in the discus

  • London Jones, 46-1 in the shot put, the only girl over 46 feet so far
