'Belles hold top spot

The Angelo State women's track & field team remain atop the NCAA Division II Top 25 while the Rams dropped one spot to No. 6, according to the latest poll released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

With 255.68, the Rambelles extended its lead over defending national champion Lincoln (240.96) to remain in the top spot. The top five remained unchanged with Grand Valley State at No. 3 (234.09), California-San Diego at No. 4 (175.03) and Adams State at No. 5 (156.46).

The 'Belles have 13 automatic-qualifying performances for the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships, slated for May 27-29 in Charlotte, N.C., while adding 12 provisional marks.

On the men's side, the Rams collected 134.95 points in the poll as they dropped from No. 5 to No. 6 this week. Defending national champion St. Augustine's remains in the top spot with 213.84 points. Adams State (210.76) jumped two spots to No. 2, Abilene Christian (171.70) remained at No. 3, Pittsburg State (157.10) dropped two spots to No. 4 and Ashland (141.29) climbed one spot to complete the top five.

The Rams have five automatic performances and 10 provisional marks for the national meet.

The ASU teams will now host the Lone Star Conference Championships, May 7-9, at the LeGrand Sports Complex.
