Live results and other information for SLC outdoor track
Several Sam Houston State athletes look to contend for medals at the 46th annual Southland Conference outdoor track and field championships to begin Friday at the University of Texas at Arlington.
That is unusual for a Bearkat program that has produced three outdoor women's team titles and two men's outdoor championships since 2005.
Sam Houston's A. J. Edwards, Chris Gilchrist and C. J. Patterson go into the conference meet ranked first, fourth and eighth among Southland long jumpers this year. Edwards' leap of 25 feet, 5.25 inches leads the league.
In the decathlon, Matt Johnson posted the Southland's top point total of 7,266 when he placed fifth at the Texas Relays.
Gilchrist ranks second in the Southland in the triple jump with a mark of 50 feet, 7.25 inches. Brek Christensen stands seventh in the discus with a best mark of 153 feet, nine inches.
For the SHSU women, Christina Webb stands fourth in the hammer (140' 5"), fifth in the discus (135' 1") and sixth in the shot put (46' 0.75"). Other with top eight Southland rankings in field events include Ambra McCuin in the triple jump (7th, 39' 2.5") and Kristi Hermes (7th, 11' 11.75") and Shelbie Zotyka (8th, 11' 5.75") in the pole vault.
On the track, Sam Houston's Scottie Jones was the Southland's second best time in the 110 meter hurdles with a 14.13 second clocking. Jay Newman stands fourth in the league in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 52.14. Jordan Heggie was the top women's 100 meter hurdle mark with a clocking of 13.62 seconds.
"We have several athletes who we believe have an opportunity to post marks that will earn them a berth in the NCAA national competition later this month," Self said. "This year we won't be one of the teams in the running for the title. We made a conscious decision to red-shirt some of our top athletes at the beginning of the outdoor season. With those red-shirts back in the mix plus the talent young recruiting class we'll have next spring, we definitely will be back in the running for the title in 2011. Still, this year, we have some athletes who will make some noise this year, especially in the field events."
Competition at the Southland meet begins with the decathlon and hepthalon on Friday and Saturday. The running prelims will take place Friday starting at 5 p.m. and finals will be held Sunday evening.
