Arlington, Tx - Ambra McCuin won the Southland Conference women's triple jump championship Sunday afternoon with a career best leap of 40', 4.75".
McCuin produced her winning mark on her next to last attempt to best runner-up Camelia Sims of Stephen F. Austin by a half an inch. McCuin's leap bettered her own personal best by more than one foot.
The triple jumper was one of five Sam Houston State competitors to medal at the 46th annual Southland Outdoor Track and Field Championships held this week at UT-Arlington. The five student-athletes who medaled for Sam Houston earned All-Southland Conference honors in eight events.
Chris Gilchrist picked up his second runner-up finish of the meet with a second place triple jump of 51' 6.5" Sunday. Gilchrist also was second Saturday in the long jump with a mark of 24' 1.5".
Christina Webb was runner-up in the shot put Saturday with a career best 48 feet, six inches. Sunday she placed fifth in the discus (145' 6").
McCuin also placed third Saturday in the long jump, topping her career best leap by more than a foot with a mark of 19 feet, six inches.
Scottie Jones was runner-up in the men's 110 meter hurdles, running the race in 14.22 seconds. Jay Newman placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 52.43 seconds.
The Sam Houston women finished fifth in the overall team standings with 67 points while the Bearkat men placed ninth with 42 points. Stephen F. Austin won the women's outdoor championship while UTSA took the men's team trophy.
In other Sam Houston action on Sunday, Jordan Heggie (13.85), Sabrina Starr (14.10) and Pashe Moore (14.43) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100 meter hurdles.
Kristi Hermes and Shelbie Zotyka placed fourth and sixth in the women's pole vault. Hermes cleared 11 feet, 9.75 inches while Zotyka produced a mark of 11 feet, 3.75 inches.
Cutter Bernard (15' 1.75") placed seventh in the men's pole vault. A. J. Edwards (47' 2.25") finished 10th in the men's triple jump. Jasmine Mitchell (37' 6.5") was 12th in the triple jump.
Simbi George, Alyssa Dooley and Dakota Stewart each finished seventh in their events with George posting a 56.99 clocking in the 400 meters, Dooley going 2:15.20 in the 800 meters and Stewart posting a 1:04.17 in the 400 meter hurdles.
Roger Rueweller (1:53.95) was sixth and Matt Stephenson (2:00.52) placed 11th in the men's 800 meters.
The women's 4x400 relay finished fifth with a 3:45.93 clocking while the 4x100 relay team placed seventh with a time of 47.28 seconds.
