The Sprints in Texas are Strong

Final Weeks of the Indoor Season

The indoor season is nearly complete, and Texas sprinters used the final major weekend of competition to sharpen the state and national picture. With multiple high schoolers lining up at the USATF Indoor Championships, the closing stretch of the season was all about marks that held up against the pros.

Girls Sprints

The headline performance of the past weekend came from twin sisters Mia Maxwell and Mariah Maxwell, who are now the fastest sister duo in high school history.

At the 2026 USATF Indoor Championships, they finished second and third in the 60m final against a professional field. Jacious Sears took the win in 7.04, but Mia's 7.13 tied the high school national record, and Mariah's 7.14 ranks as the third-fastest performance in high school history.

Within Texas, the 60m depth remains tight behind the Maxwells. Evah Elleby, Lily Pierrot, and London Graham sit tied at 7.38, forming the next tier on the state leaderboard. To crack the top ten this indoor season required 7.52 or faster.

Over 200 meters, Mia Maxwell has controlled the leaderboard since early January. Her 22.89 still stands as US No. 1. Mariah Maxwell follows at 22.97, giving Texas two athletes under 23 seconds indoors. McKenzie Roberson sits third in the state at 23.66. In the 400m, Brooke Lloyd led the state all indoor season with a 53.43

Only two Texas athletes broke 54 seconds: Lloyd and Mariah Maxwell, who ran 53.92. Maxwell also added a 36.24 over 300m indoors - a national record.

Boys Sprints

The boys 60m leaderboard shifted in the month's final weekend.

Chinweoke Onwuchekwa had led Texas since late January with a 6.60. At USATF Indoors, Dillon Mitchell lowered the standard to 6.59 in the prelims, then returned to run 6.60 in the final for seventh overall against a professional field.

In the 200m, Tate Taylor has held the top spot since his 20.85 in early January. Two others joined him under 21 seconds: Jayden Kennedy (20.95) and Mitchell (20.97). With three sub-21 indoor marks, Texas ranks among the nation's best, trailing only Eddie Bruner Jr. (20.71) from Washington and Brady Pineo (20.79) from Florida.

The 400m has been led by Jordan Riggs, whose 46.37 remains the fastest mark in Texas. Jason Walker sits one hundredth behind at 46.38, with Joshua Shelton also under 47 at 46.93.

As the indoor season looks to come to a full close soon, the numbers are straightforward:

  • Two high school girls ran 7.14 or faster in the 60m. Both from Texas.

  • Texas owns the US No. 1 mark in the girls 200m.

  • Three boys broke 21 seconds indoors.

  • Three boys broke 47 seconds indoors.

  • Texas high schoolers lowered the state 60m lead at a national championship meet against professionals.
