ABILENE -- ACU discus thrower Nick Jones has been selected to compete for the United States in the upcoming North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Under-23 Track and Field Championships.

The United States will compete against teams from other northern hemisphere countries July 9-11 in Miramar, Fla.  Jones will throw in the finals at 4:30 p.m. Friday on the first day of the meet.

The NACAC Athletic Association's U23 Championships are held every two years in one of the 32 member nations of the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association, one of six regional athletics associations affiliated with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Team USA dominated the medal count and the record books at the 2008 NACAC Under-23 Championships in Toluca, Mexico. The team won 62 total medals (28 gold, 26 silver, 6 bronze) and set 12 meet records.

Jones didn't compete for the Wildcats in 2010, instead using a redshirt year to work on technique and begin preparing for a possible run at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team.

However, Jones will return to the Wildcats in 2011 as a two-time NCAA Division II national champion in the discus.  Jones won the 2008 national title as a freshman in Walnut, Calif., and then repeated as a sophomore in 2009 in San Angelo, winning on his final throw.
