JONES. MAXWELL. WILLIAMS. ONE MEET, THREE NATIONAL STORIES
Jones ran 12.97 in the prelims and 13.15 to win. Maxwell beat college athletes at 22.25. Williams threw 202 feet and leads the country
The 98th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays drew professionals, collegians, and high schoolers to Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, and in many cases, the high schoolers held their own. Several of the athletes in this piece left Austin leading the state or even the country. Let's take a look.
Andrew Jones came to Austin knowing the track. As a sophomore he won the 300mH at the Texas Relays in 36.75. On Friday in the 110mH prelims, the Klein Collins senior clocked 12.97 (+2.8) - wind-aided, but the fastest time ever run in the event under any conditions. He came back Saturday in the final and ran 13.15 (+1.9) to win, the second fastest wind-legal 110mH ever run by a US high school athlete. Avonte Earl was second at 13.38 and Cadyn Key of Katy was third at 13.45. Jones, a Texas A&M commit, has also run 10.58 in the 100m, 21.07 in the 200m, and 34.94 in the 300mH this season, which is US#2 all-time behind Vance Nilsson's 34.83.
Mariah Maxwell did not race against high schoolers at the Texas Relays. The APXP Speed Development senior entered the 200m invitational against college athletes and won in 22.25 (+3.8) - wind-aided, but HS No. 3 all-conditions all-time behind Allyson Felix (22.11) and Dana Wilson (22.21). She leads the state and the country in the event. Twin sister Mia Maxwell ran 22.84 (+4.0) at the Clyde Hart Classic and sits second on the state leaderboard. Carrie Cresser ran 23.13 at the Texas A&M Bluebonnet High School Invitational and sits third.
CJ Williams of Frisco Heritage threw 202-9.25 in the discus and 69-2.25 in the shot put at the Texas Relays - both season openers, both PRs. He now leads the country in the shot. In the discus, Kelton Burgoon has thrown 201-8.00 to sit second, the only other athlete in the state over 200 feet. In the shot put, Marlon Cook sits second at 65-1.25 and Jett Harrison third at 64-10.50.
Jaxon Asbill leads the state 3200m at 9:04.75, run at the Texas Relays - his third PR of the outdoor season after earlier marks in the 800m (1:54.42) and 1600m (4:11.84). Kai Gutierrez of Carroll High School sits second at 9:04.84, run at the Dragon Relays.
Cooper Ford of Austin Bowie ran 6:01.74 in the 2K steeplechase at the Texas Relays, a PR, to lead the state. The junior has also run 1:58.63 in the 800m and 4:21.44 in the 1600m this season.
Lilly Koenig of Smithson Valley ran 4:46.58 in the 1600m at the Texas Relays to take the state lead by 0.03 seconds over Addyson Bristow's 4:46.61 from the Texas Distance Festival. Koenig opened her season at 5:09.31 in late February.
