Jones wins shot put at Tech

LUBBOCK – ACU junior Nick Jones wasted no time re-establishing himself as one of the top throwers in collegiate track and field Saturday, winning the shot put in his first event for the Wildcats since the 2009 outdoor championship meet.

Jones – the two-time NCAA Division II outdoor national champion in the discus who redshirted both indoors and outdoors in 2010 – won the shot put Saturday at the Texas Tech Open, posting a mark of 57-0.25 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II indoor championship meet.  The only other qualifier for the Wildcats on either the men's or women's team was Kevin Johnson, who finished sixth in the 55 meter hurdles in provisional qualifying time of 7.72 seconds.

No female athlete posted a qualifying mark either Friday or Saturday in the season-opening meet for the ACU track and field team, but Chloe Susset did win the 3000 meters on Saturday with a time of 10:49.84.

Both ACU teams will be back in action again next weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational inside the Athletic Training Center on the Tech campus.
