Fort Bend Marshall Girls Win UIL 5A 4x100m Relay

The UIL 5A girls 4x100-meter relay final once again delivered one of the fastest sprint races of the state meet, with five teams entering Austin already under 46 seconds from the regional rounds. While the long-standing conference record of 45.09 set by McKinney North in 2017 remained the target, Fort Bend Marshall entered the meet as one of the favorites after finishing third a year ago and returning much of that lineup.

Defending champion Red Oak had graduated key pieces from last year's 45.46 title-winning quartet, leaving the event wide open among a loaded field that included Iowa Colony, Prosper Walnut Grove, Midlothian Heritage, Mansfield Timberview, and Killeen Chaparral.

From the opening leg, Prosper Walnut Grove established itself early with a strong start, but Killeen Chaparral quickly made up ground through the middle of the race with aggressive exchanges and strong sprinting around the curve. Fort Bend Marshall, positioned in lane seven, appeared slightly behind after a less-than-perfect exchange midway through the race, while Iowa Colony held a slight advantage entering the final handoff down in lane one. As the anchors took the baton, it looked as though Iowa Colony might have enough to hold off the field.

But Fort Bend Marshall's anchor leg proved overwhelming over the final straightaway. The quartet of Zoe Kouaho, Phoenix Glover, Megan Thomas, and Amira Mopkins surged past Iowa Colony in the closing meters to secure the state championship in 45.54, the second-fastest winning time in the classification over the past decade. Iowa Colony still produced a tremendous race to finish second in 45.82, narrowly holding off Prosper Walnut Grove, which crossed third in 45.85. The trio all dipped under 46 seconds in one of the deepest finals of the meet.

Behind the top three, Midlothian Heritage and Mansfield Timberview also delivered strong performances, finishing fourth and fifth in 46.20 and 46.21, respectively, while Killeen Chaparral and El Paso Chapin remained close behind in another tightly packed sprint final. Although the conference record survived another season, the race highlighted the exceptional sprint depth within UIL 5A girls' track and field and showcased Fort Bend Marshall's ability to overcome adversity and execute when it mattered most.
