Zahria Bernard (#1968) goes back-to-back in the UIL 5A Girls 100m
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 5A girls' 100-meter final returned to Austin with defending champion Zahria Bernard once again at the center of the sprint spotlight. After winning the 2025 state title as a freshman in 11.35, Bernard entered her sophomore season carrying the pressure of both defending her championship and chasing one of the oldest records in the classification - Victoria Jordan's 5A state meet record of 11.16 set in 2018. The field around Bernard was loaded with experienced challengers, including Frisco Heritage senior Sunmi Akinyeye, Melissa senior Kennedy Branch, and regional leader Laurin Gardner of El Paso Chapin, setting up one of the most anticipated sprint finals of the meet.
From the gun, the race was tightly contested through the opening 30 meters as nearly the entire field exited the drive phase together. Akinyeye, running from lane three, began to gain slight separation midway through the race with an excellent transition into maximum velocity. Bernard, however, remained composed in lane seven. Rather than forcing the race early, the Red Oak sophomore trusted her mechanics and top-end speed, gradually reeling Akinyeye back in over the final 40 meters.

As the field surged toward the finish line, Bernard's closing speed proved to be the difference. She edged ahead late to successfully defend her state title in a wind-aided 11.32 (+2.1), narrowly missing a fully legal performance but still producing one of the fastest marks in the classification this season. Akinyeye finished a close second in 11.36, while Branch completed a strong Dallas-Fort Worth sweep of the podium in 11.46. Richmond Randle's Justice Black and Mansfield Timberview senior Brooke Middleton rounded out the top five in another highly competitive sprint final.
Although the slight tailwind kept the race from challenging the official record books, the championship once again showcased the incredible sprint depth within UIL 5A. Bernard's ability to stay relaxed under pressure and execute her race over the final meters highlighted why she remains one of the premier young sprinters in Texas - and with still two years remaining in her high school career, the classification record may remain well within reach.
