Wildcats still No. 1 in poll


NEW ORLEANS – The ACU men's track and field team remains the top-ranked unit in the country, according to the latest NCAA Division II Track and Field poll, which was released Tuesday by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association.

With 232.61 points according to the computer ranking system, the Wildcats have a substantial lead over No. 2 Lincoln (Mo.), which has 173.36 points.  ACU's longtime rival, St. Augustine's (N.C.) is third, followed by Western State (Colo.) and Adams State (Colo.)

ACU's Lone Star Conference rivals Angelo State and Texas A&M-Kingsville are Nos. 9 and 11, respectively, in this week's poll.

On the women's side, Grand Valley State (Mich.) has 322.94 computer ranking points to earn the No. 1 spot, well ahead of No. 2 Lincoln, which has 227.68 points.  The top five is rounded out by Adams State at No. 3, Central Missouri at No. 4 and Johnson C. Smith at No. 5.

The ACU Wildcats are No. 19 in this week's poll after being ranked No. 17 in last week's poll. Lone Star Conference champion Angelo State dropped out of this week's power poll, leaving ACU as the only lsc team in this week's poll.

The top teams in the nation will be decided on the track next week in Turlock, Calif., when Cal State-Stanislaus hosts the NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet, May 26-28.
