That was all that separated Elizabeth "Libby" Hamblin of Pantego Christian from a TAPPS cross country state championship.
In one of the most thrilling finishes in recent TAPPS history, Hamblin crossed the line in 12:58.36, just one-tenth of a second behind Savannah Parker of San Antonio Christian School at Castle Hills, who won in 12:58.26.
The finish was remarkable for another reason: Hamblin was competing in her first cross country season.
Known primarily as a standout 400- and 800-meter runner on the track, Hamblin embraced cross country with a long-term vision. She believed the added endurance and aerobic strength would make her a better middle-distance runner when track season arrived.
The gamble paid off almost immediately.
Now entering the 2026 season, Hamblin returns as one of the favorites to contend for the TAPPS individual title, carrying the confidence that comes from proving she can compete with the state's very best.
