H.S. cross country: Tascosa Lady Rebels win city meet

BARB AMRHEIN

The Tascosa Lady Rebels, behind freshman Hollee Ratliff's individual victory and seniors Sarah Cobb and Haley Clark's third- and fifth-place finishes, pulled off a big upset Friday in winning the 39th Annual AISD City Cross Country Meet at Thompson Park with a score of 25 points.

The Amarillo High Lady Sandies, who had won at least the previous 18 city meets, took second with 30 points.

Amarillo High, the perennial girls favorite, ran without defending individual champion Kirstie Smith, who was ill, but Lady Sandies coach Jay Hufstedler made no excuses as he watched his team lose for the first time in his 10 years at the helm.

"Congratulations to Tascosa and their coach (Chasity Nachtigall)," Hufstedler said. "She's got them working."

The Lady Rebels, who three years ago could not field a full team, saw the fruits of this past summer come to fruition, Nachtigall said.

"Last year, we had two girls running in the summer, and this year we had 10 or 12 there every day," Nachtigall said. "Honestly, I had a feeling this morning we could win. We've been working on team building."

The Lady Rebels' work showed with Ratliff coming from behind in the last 400 meters to overtake Amarillo High's Jenny Taylor. Cobb, who finished sixth last year, and Clark, who didn't place in the top 10 last year, also moved up late in the race.

"She (Taylor) ran really strong," Ratliff said. "I had an advantage by letting her lead and drafting."

Ratliff won the approximately 2.7-mile race in 17 minutes, 36.55 seconds. Taylor finished in 17:54.04.

"We all made a wrong turn," Taylor said of the race that was to have been three miles. "That didn't cost me the race. I've got to learn to kick sooner."

Cobb was not completely shocked at the team win and echoed her coach.

"I thought we could win," she said. "We've been running a lot stronger this year."

In the boys race, junior Reid Splawn successfully defended his individual title, and the Tascosa Rebels won their seventh consecutive title with 15 points.

The boys race was more predictable, with Splawn winning in 17:10.60, followed by teammates Paul Crawford, Matthew Noriega, Edmund Pine and Anthony Navarrette for a sweep of the first five places and a repeat of last year's perfect score of 15 points.

Rebels coach Sean Hargrove was pleased with another win.

"We ran better as a team than last week at Marcus," Hargrove said. "We had over two minutes between our first and fifth runner (last week), and today was about 50 seconds."
