By SAM KHAN JR. Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle AUSTIN — It was sunny and therewere clear skies at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium on Saturday, and though the forecast didn't call for inclement weather, the place was hit by a hurricane. The Hightower Hurricanes took the Class 5A state track meet by storm, winning the boys team title and setting a national record in the process. The Hurricanes compiled 51 points, highlighted by the 20 they picked up in winning the 800-meter relay. The quartet of Isaiah Sweeny, Cleon Davis, Ugonna Amarikwa and Clyde Lee set a national federation record with a time of 1:23.92, smashing the year-old record of 1:24.10 set by Eisenhower at last year's state meet. David FloresSan Antonio Express-News AUSTIN — Stevens sophomore Rynell Parson was warming up before the 100-meter dash finals Saturday when former San Antonio record-holder Mark McNeil walked into Myers Stadium with personal trainer Bay-Bay McClinton. McClinton pointed Parson out to McNeil, who never has met the 16-year-old phenom, as they caught their first glimpse of the UIL Class 5A state track and field championships. Within earshot of Parson, McNeil thought about speaking to him briefly. "But I decided not to," McNeil said. "He was focusing on the race and I didn't want to bother him. He looked ready to go." McNeil, a 1980 Sam Houston graduate who owned the San Antonio high school record in the 100 before Parson broke it this spring, was right. MORE OF SA EXPRESS NEWS ARTCILE

Dan McCarneyExpress-News AUSTIN — At the tender age of 16, Stevens sophomore Rynell Parson has already become a master at the fine art of nonchalance. Ask him about any of his myriad track achievements, and you're just as liable to get a shrug and a few mumbles as you will a show of genuine excitement. Parson was up to his old tricks Saturday at Myers Stadium — until his mother flashed the gold medal he'd just won as the Class 5A 100-meter champion. "It's a great thing," Parson said, a broad smile spoiling his stoic demeanor. "That's the state 'ship. There are a lot of great athletes in this state. It's been a good year." Terrence ThomasExpress-News AUSTIN — Randolph girls coach Misty Kinsey stood amongst a crowd of well-wishers, a smile splashed across her face as she exchanged hugs and congratulations. A year ago when she left Myers Stadium — the Class 2A team championship in tow — her colleagues warned of the dangers that lay ahead. "I've heard other coaches that have won state championships say that the year after, it's the hardest year of your career," Kinsey said. "It was tough this year. But they worked hard and kept their focus." MORE OF SA EXPRESS NEWS ARTICLE
