Rambelles win home classic

The Angelo State women's cross country team took first while the men's squad finished second as the Rams and Rambelles hosted the 2009 ASU Blue & Gold Classic Tuesday, held at the San Angelo Regional Airport.

Senior Brittney Heath paced the Rambelles with a second-place finish in the five-kilometer race, finishing in a time of 20:34. Freshman Emeline Crutcher finished fourth (20:48), senior Paige Massingill ninth (21:23) and sophomore Alyssa Priest 10th to round out the ASU women in the top 10. Freshman Jessica Boudreau placed 15th (22:16) and freshman Brittney Welchon finished 24th (24:28).

The Rambelles finished the meet with 38 points, two ahead of second-place South Plains College (40). New Mexico Military placed third with 61 points and Tarleton State was fourth with 75 points. SPC's Lisa Forsberg won the event in a time of 20:13.

On the men's side, it was South Plains that took the team title with 20 points, placing four of the top five runners. Angelo State placed second with 36 points and Odessa College was third with 84 points. SPC's Tallam Kipruto won the five-mile race in a time of 26:08.

Senior Brian Carroll led the ASU men with a fourth-place finish in a time of 28:40. The Rams placed four runners in the top 10 with senior Shannon Cunningham in sixth place (29:08), freshman Isac Valdez seventh (29:19) and junior Nate Gonzales eighth (29:36). Freshman Nick Wargo was 11th (29:52), sophomore Randal Guinn was 12th (30:15) and sophomore Robert Hummingbird was 15th (31:02).

This was the final regular-season meet for the Rams and Rambelles. The two teams will next run in the Lone Star Conference championships, scheduled for Oct. 24 in Canyon, hosted by West Texas A&M.
