Track dominates Trinity meet

The Angelo State track and field squads returned to action Saturday at the Trinity Invitational and added another handful of provisional marks and an automatic qualifier for the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships.

Junior Tyler Orlando became the first Ram to earn a spot in May's national championships with a personal-best throw of 213'11" in the javelin throw. The 2009 All-American in the event, recorded the ninth best javelin toss in school history as he placed first. Sophomore Jacob McDonald placed second in the event behind Orlando, with a provisional-qualifying throw of 194'6".

Senior James Howell recorded a provisional mark of 47.58 in winning the 400-meter dash Saturday. Sophomore Trent Dalton also won the 400-meter hurdles and provisionally qualified in the event with a time of 53.84.

The Rams won the Trinity Invite with a point total of 180, edging Tarleton State (155).

On the women's side, senior sprinter Celethia Byrd recorded a provisional mark in her third individual event of the season as she recorded a personal best in the 400-meter dash. Byrd won the event Saturday in a time of 55.34. Byrd previously recorded provisional marks in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Senior Aisha Adams improved upon her provisional mark in the 100-meter hurdles, winning the event in a time of 14.14. Adams also added a provisional mark in the long jump, winning the event with a leap of 19'4.75. Freshman Summer Sutherland recorded a personal best in the pole vault at 12'0", improving her provisional-qualifying mark.

The Rambelles also won the Trinity Invite, collecting a total of 199 points. Huston-Tillotson finished a distant second with 75 points.

The ASU squads next compete this weekend as the Rams and Rambelles travel to Stephenville Thursday for the Tarleton State Relays.
