T&F closes Texas Relays

The Angelo State men's and women's track & field teams closed out the Texas Relays Saturday with more impressive performances at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Senior Chrystal Ruiz opened the day with a fifth-place finish in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles, recording the third-best time in the event in school history. Ruiz' personal-best time of 59.52 automatically qualified her for next month's NCAA Division II National Championships in the event. In the men's 400 hurdles finals, sophomore Trenton Dalton placed fourth with a time of 52.57 and junior Brian Holik placed fifth in a time of 52.69, both provisionally qualifying for the national meet in the event.

The Rams' 4x100-meter relay squad placed sixth in the college division as the foursome of senior James Howell, junior Ryan Adkins, sophomore Nick Smith and freshman Isidro Garcia recorded a time of 41.39 in the event.  Smith later placed sixth and provisionally qualified in the 100-meter dash with a season-best time of 10.58.

Later Saturday, both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams took center stage. The Rams placed second in the college division as the foursome of Howell, junior Terence Holland, Holik and Garcia posted a season-best time of 3:09.62, automatically qualifying for the national meet. And in ASU's final race of the event, the senior quartet of Ruiz, Celethia ByrdAisha Adams and Andria Nussey placed eighth in the university/college division Saturday with a new school-record time of 3:40.29, improving on the Rambelles' previous automatic-qualifying mark set in the event prelims Friday.

The Rams and Rambelles return to action next week when ASU hosts the 38th Annual ASU/David Noble Relays at the LeGrand Sports Complex. The multi-event take place Apr. 8-9 with the open meet taking place Saturday, Apr. 10.
