Texas UIL State Meet Review: Top Performers

Alvin's junior superstar Kynnedy Flannel had herself a heck of a day on Saturday, at the UIL 6A championships. Flannel started her evening off with a personal best and 6A state record in the long jump. She belted a 21-2.75 on her third jump to bump up her confidence going into the final and it was good enough to hold on for the win. Flannel then hit the track and took the 100m over a very tough field in 11.43. Her business wasn't done yet, she then turned her focus to the 200m where she took on some more 6A sprint studs. Flannel crossed the line first in a new PR 23.34 and her third gold medal of the meet.

Another non distance gold medal trifecta performer was Bremond's Joe Williams. Williams put his speed and fitness on display by winning the 100m, 200m, and the 400m. He won the 100m and 200m titles for the second straight season by going 10.61 and 21.48. Winning both events last season must not have satisfied Williams because he decided to add the 400m to his arsenal. Williams took down all competitors with his 47.53.

Ben Bolt's Mikel Escobar is no new name to UIL track and field fans. Escobar won the 2A boys 800m for the last two years. Guess what? That's right, he did it again for the third straight year. Escobar did it in PR fashion with his 1:54.32 winning time. All 2A competitors can live in piece knowing that Escobar will graduate in the next few weeks and others will now have a chance to get an 800m title.

Mansfield Lake Ridge super sensation Jasmine Moore keeps piling up the accomplishments and records. This time she took down the sophomore class national triple jump record. On Friday night, Moore belted a personal best of 43-4.75. She is the only girl in the nation to jump over 43 feet. Moore now owns the national class record for both freshmen and sophomore girls. The record was fine and dandy, but her work was not done. She went on to take the her second straight long jump title over the weekend as well.

Another busy young lady was Mesquite Horn's Kaylor Harris. Harris was a part of the Horn relay that started the 6A meet off with there awesome 44.94 win in the 4x100 relay. That time placed Horn as the 11th fastest high school team ever. However, Harris' day was just getting started. She had to rush over to the 100 hurdles where she beat one of the best hurdle field ever assembled in the state of Texas. Her 13.38 was amazing considering she just picked up the hurdles as a third event this season. With one more race to compete in Harris hardly had time to breathe as she had to walk from the finish line back to the start for the 100m. She just missed winning her third gold medal as she ran the straightaway in 11.56 seconds, taking the silver.

Dallas Carter Junior Sha'Carri Richardson showed why she worked so hard all season. She hit the track in the 4x100 with her teammates to get her first victory of the night in 45.96, as the ladies broke their own 4A state record set just last season. Richardson then went on to win the 100m in 11.28 to run the fastest girls 100m of the weekend. She then added a third gold medal in the 200m with her 23.48.
