Salute to seniors 2012-2013 (My name is Chauncey Wells.)

Who would you consider your biggest competitor over your years of competing?

Myself, mentally. Sometimes, I've overestimate and underestimated my competition. The fact is before any jump, throw, and/or race of any meet; your competion has just as much of an advantage to win as you do.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment in track or cross country?

My biggest accomplishment in track is earning an athletic scholarship. I'm glad I can financially be less of a burden towards my parents' wallet.

If you could do it over again what would you change?

Nothing at all. I wouldn't do anything over because without my accomplishments and failures I've had in the past, I wouldn't be the athlete that I am today.

What was the most difficult obstacle you had to overcome?

My most difficult obstacle is my transition from long jump to triple jump during a meet. This is also an obstacle for me vice versa. Some people think it should not have any difficulty since they both involve jumping. That's not true. They are in the same book but they are two very different chapters.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss my teammates who I call trackfam the most. Some teammates over the years are more than just kids from the same school I attend practice with. They are close friends who I have had great memories with on and off the track and will truelly miss.

What advice would you giver younger athletes?

Success takes time. In order to be the best you can be, you have to work for that goal. Nobody can accomplish that goal overnight nor over a week. Hard work and consistency will lead you down the right path to success.

What influnce has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

Coach Walker has taught me to not take anything for granted. Just because you have done well one week doesn't mean you deserve to slack off next week. Stay hungry, stay consistent, and stay focussed.

What are your college plans?

My plans are to attend Grambling State University and get a degree in my major. I also plan to do triple jump for Grambling State University's track and field team. GO TIGERS!

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I'd like to say thank you to my parents and my coaches (Coach Walker, K, Pennington, Shaw, and Brown of Meridian High School in Meridian, MS). I'd also like to thank the man you got me into this amazing sport of track & field to begin with, Coach Jack Suddoth of Washington School in Greenville, MS.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thank you, Mr. Matthews for giving me the time of day. These are great questions. Also thank you for keeping athletes and coaches updated.  I read all your articles posted on MS.milesplit website. I've enjoyed the track teams I've been on during my middle and high school years. Im excited for next season. I'll give Grambling State University my best.
