Preseason XC Countdown: Girls #9

Texas MileSplit is counting down the 12 days until the first full weekend of cross country meets. Each day we will highlight one boys team and one girls team, with the idea that they are "programs to watch" for the upcoming season. This series is not intended to be a true ranking of the top 12 teams in the state overall, but instead an opportunity to highlight schools that have had strong recent success or have lots of talent returning for this fall.

Ever run on a course so fast that it needed a speed limit? Prosper has, and the Eagles are a sleeper candidate in 5A.

It's no secret that most of the top cross country programs (here and across the country) have a high percentage of year-round runners. I've also noticed that many programs that have a reputation for year-to-year improvement in cross country put an emphasis on the 3200 in the spring season. That's one of the things that stands out about the Prosper girls, who ranked 5th in Texas (including all classifications) with a 5-girl 3200 average of 11:54 during outdoor track. The biggest individual improver was Carnley Graham, the team's #4 from 2013, who ran 11:16 and 5:14. Factor in 3 other sub-20 returners and you have a potentially powerful front four, although that could also expose possible large gaps between the 4, 5, and 6 runners in the team. Though the Eagles made huge progress last fall, they still fell short of the state meet; however, just getting there may not be enough for a team with three seniors in the top 7, including Graham and Kyra Drobney. The database ranks Prosper second among returning 5A teams, putting them in the mix for a potential title this fall.
