Indoor It Factor: Top Historical Performances of the Winter Season

Ryen Frazier, Ravenscroft: Mile

When Frazier cruised to a 4:44 in November as part of her tune-up for Foot Locker Nationals, it was already the fastest indoor time in state history. She improved that to 4:41.56 in the Camel City Elite at the end of January, which converts to 4:39.93 for 1600 meters. That puts Ryen 2.3% ahead of the next-fastest time, which happens to be her sister Wesley's 4:46.66. Wesley had taken the state record from Julia Lucas (Myers Park), the first NC girl to break 4:50 indoors; Lucas herself was 2% better than the previous all-time #1, Karen Godlock (Polk County).

For her own part, Wesley Frazier was transcendent in the 3200 (3% faster than the previous state record) and especially in the 5000, where her state record was 11.4% better than the previous all-time #1 mark. Her 16:18.01 is still 4.3% faster than anyone else has run for that distance, despite the efforts of a wave of 5 girls who ran the event last year, all surpassing the pre-Frazier record. Will Ryen move up to the 5000 at New Balance Nationals Indoor, or will she continue to focus on the mile?
