Early Mornings & Increased Mileage: Evan Luecke Training Blog

Monday- Started off this week with a nice good fartlek. The workout was 3x7 with 3 minutes off in between. I started my warmup at the park going two miles out. I planned on doing the workout on a mile dirt trail right by the middle school. Which was right by where the two mile mark from the park was. I started off on and went for 7 minutes, then I was off for 3 minutes, I jogged back to the start of the trail, then went again for 7 minutes, this one was a little harder and probably the hardest one out of the three. It seemed like the time was taken forever, I just needed to relax, my form was starting to break down. Eventually the 7 minutes would be over. I stopped and got some water during my 3 minutes off, just so I could finish this last set hard and fast. The last set was my fastest set out of the three. Feeling a lot better and it was a lot more smoother. I finished 21 minutes averaging 5:40 pace. I had to run back to the park for my cool down. So after cool down and all I did about 4.5 miles in the workout. 3.7 when i was on and .8 on the off. Overall I got about 8.5 miles. Feeling a little tired after all said and done.

Tuesday- Today was my recovery run. I went to Squabble creek and was supposed to meet a runner fried from frisco there but he called me when I was on the way saying he couldn’t make it. Fortunate enough Edwin came out there and ran with me, he had 9 mile double and I had 45-65 minutes of a recovery run. We did 45 minutes getting a little bit over 6 miles done. I went back to my old high school to finish the run. I did an extra 3 miles in around 21 minutes. Then I iced. Unfortunately I had to ice in a bucket just my lower legs, cause our Ice baths are still out. I just sat there with my legs in a freezing bucket. Later, I went to Anytime and did my workout, I did arms and abs. The abs were a killer since one of my friends showed me this ab workout video off youtube. Its called Davey Wavey abs. Not really the best title, but it does help A lot. After the workout, I get to enjoy the rest of the day off work free.

Wednesday- Another day off of Work, which was good and I planned on sleeping in. That didnt work out well since I guess I am so used to waking up early. I woke up around 7 then went back to bed for about two more hours. By the time I woke up and all it was too late to do my workout without having a heat stroke. So I was gonna do it tonight. I had a 15 min warm up 2 sets of 6x200s. Doing them I averaged 27-30 seconds per 200. The workout was sort of a fartlek but at the same time intervals. With 2 miles warming up and 2 miles, 2400 of a workout and about 800 meters total in between the intervals. I got around 7 miles. Instead of doing these on the track I did these around a soccer field. I was feeling really good and I like these type of workouts. It changes up your routine a little bit and switches over from long mileage to quick and working on speed.

Thursday- Last night Brock texted me with this crazy idea. He wanted to do a 5:00 am run. Meaning we wake up at 4:45 to go run. I thought he was crazy, but he convinced me to do it. So Thursday morning I wake up at 4:40. I get ready, eat my pre-run bananas and I go. I sit up at the high school, doing some stretches, and getting ready for this run. Brock was really excited for this run. I have no idea why. So we get into the run, the run is feeling perfect. We were both feeling good and not really tired. We were around 6:50-7:00 flat pace the whole run, which was real weird because we usually start off real fast for the run like at around 6:20-6:30. We finished off in 42 minutes getting 6 miles in. I rested a little bit, then I did 40 more minutes alone, because Brock only had 6 miles, I had 70-80 minutes. Finished the other 42 minutes, doing the same route around the same pace. Then I took a little nap after getting to see the sunrise. Went back up to the school did a mile warmup, then I finished my workout doing 6- 200s, a cool down mile and doing an ab workout with my old friend. Who now goes to West Texas A&M. Then luckily, Coach Watts was there so she got us some buckets after her and Caylon did there workout, so we could ice. We got in the bucket for 10 minutes, let our legs thaw out then we got back in for 10 minutes. This Ice “bath” was much needed. My legs were starting to get heavy.

Total- around 14 miles today.

Lets see how my legs feel tomorrow after work tonight.

Friday- I decided to do my run later tonight, because work at 11 and I needed to catch up on some sleep. My legs were feeling alright, I mean they were feeling a little sore. The main thing that was bothering me was my calf, I hurt it a little back in track, so I thought it was fully healed. I had 40-60 minutes with 10 strides after. I did 8 miles then a mile worth of strides. For the 8 miles I was around 6:50 pace. Feeling strong on the run.

Total- 9

Saturday- Long run Saturday, at least it was supposed to be… Waking up early to get to White Rock Lake. Me and Edwin got there planning to do 13. I was holding it pretty well till the last half of the run. I didnt want to take any risks of injuring my calf so I stopped at 10 then did a mile cool down. During the run, I was feeling awful. We were averaging 7:00 pace and I it felt easy, but we picked up the pace in the middle of our run and I think we hit 6:45. That took a lot out of me out as well. I was looking forward to this long run. It just didn’t go as planned. I realized that I have to be taking care of my body a lot more than I should.

Sunday- rest day, today I did nothing. I went to church this morning came home, ate and then I went to work. By the time I got off it was close to dark, so I did nothing. I did need the rest though.

Week in Review- This week was sort of good training week. I say sort of because some of the workouts I wasn't satisfied with. Others went great. I think the long run definitely phased me though. I am scared that I have to sit out and not be able to run, I lose everything that I have worked so hard for. Then it's Gone just like that. I definitely am going to take this one more serious, I just have to be patient, and let whatever happens happen. I didn't wait to tell my coaches like I did during track season, so that's a plus. I just wanted not to be injury prone. It is a struggle, but it's a good one. Be smart about your training, don't over do things, and do the workouts right and you will be good.
