MileSplit Fast Four: A weekly glimpse at four of our nation's best

Reed Connor
Sr., The Woodlands H.S.
The Woodlands, TX

Highlights: Won the Texas 5A State individual championship, leading his team to the title … His time of 14:47 at the Texas State XC Championship was a PR and the second fastest time ever run on the Old Settler’s Park Course … Connor (TXRunning.com photo by Alex Aldaco) won the Region II Championship with a 3-mile personal best of 14:27 … Won the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival (14:56), the Aldine ISD Invite (15:11) and the Kingwood Andy Wells Invite in 14:31 … Placed third at the Nike South Invitational … Finished second to Colby Lowe in the 3200 and third in the 1600 at the Texas State Track and Field Championships last spring

Coach (Dan Green) says: “He was not really happy with his finishes (at the state outdoor championships last year) and he came back with a renewed vigor to train harder and better dedicate himself. He’s a very good at training. He does exactly what you tell him. The thing about Reed is he’s not fast, like great speed, but he can come after your buns that last quarter or 800 meters. He’s just a very good closer.”

Connor says: “Physically not much has changed. Most of my workouts are similar. Actually they are all the same workouts. I’m a little more comfortable doing them. The real difference has been in the mental part of my running. I got some confidence and started to be able to focus my energy before the races and not get so nervous. Colby [Lowe] used to be here in the state and he used to have a lock on the titles, and ever since he left someone had to step up in the state of Texas, and I wanted to be that person. So that kind of drove me to be a little better.”
