Phebe Musasa Sprinter On The Track An In The Field


After moving to Burnet TX in 3rd grade, Phebe Musasa was encouraged to try out for track in 8th grade because parents and coaches saw her repeatedly out distancing other players on the field. She began home school track in Austin and fell in love with the sport! Home-schooled from 5th grade thru her freshman year, Musasa played soccer on a recreational team in Marble Falls eventually switching to a club team in the Highland Lakes area.  Presently she plays in a 'all boys club' to improve her aggression on the field and going for the ball.

Phebe has nine siblings, so there's definitely a lot to play pranks on and be pranked by. Her little sister Abbie pranks the most usually with scare tactics. When not being scared by her younger sister, Phebe listens to a variety of music: rap, R&B, classic, alternative and 'every once in a while' reggae. Favorite song of the moment Chanel by Frank Ocean.

What type of workouts: "As for workouts, during off-season I do weightlifting to build muscle and after that the coaches will give us some kind of cardio to do after like ladders and dots or sprints on the field. During track season we sometimes do ladders like 300, 200, 100, 100, 200, 300. I wouldn't say I have a special diet, but I don't just eat anything that grabs my attention. Before races I either drink a plant-based protein shake or Suja vegetable juice, it doesn't really taste the best, but it gets the job done. After races I usually drink a body armor or get some electrolyte tabs and put one in my water."

Phebes, why are you always smiling? "I'm always smiling because running and playing soccer makes me happy and I always feel super blessed to be able to do what I do, also because that's just my go to expression when I'm running." Smiling all the way Musasa has goals for track, soccer and life. Track: beat the school record for the 200 (24.87) and to get her 100 time down to an 11. She plans to attend college after high school and become a sports journalist, but first she has advanced to Area in all her running events!

"I look up to a lot of people in track but the main person I look up to is Sydney McLaughlin."  

Usually Musasa runs to win and PR, 'but I'd prefer to PR.' "When I'm on the line I don't look at the other girls and figure out how I can beat them, I look at myself and remember what my coaches have taught me: to improve and eventually beat them. I first learned to run with blocks towards the beginning of the year when coach Jones pulled them out and told us to get to work, I had no idea what to do so my friend Chloe helped me out a lot with them.

Sprinting definitely helps me in soccer, especially when I'm running the ball down the line or when I get the ball around a defender and use my speed to beat them to it."

The biggest thank you goes out to my mom. From spending late nights at my club soccer practices to comforting me when I would get mad at myself in both soccer and track. She pours herself into me and my sports and I'm eternally thankful for that."
