District 5-6A Results
This just in -- Southlake Carroll is really good!
The SLC varsity girls team started the meet off running through the finish line in first through seventh places for a perfect 15 point score.
Often times, some discount perfect scores in district meets, because the competition level isn't high enough to make a perfect score difficult. It can be easily done in a district with a very good team and other teams that may be average, but that is not the case for this district.
There are some very quality athletes and teams in District 5-6A. For evidence, after the SLC dominating performance, Keller senior Vera Thompson was the first non SLC runner to cross the line. She finished in eighth place with a 18:22 time for the 5K distance and she was followed by Keller Timber Creek junior Gabriella Barrera who ran 18:46, and Northwest Nelson freshman Kamara Bradley in 10th place in 18:48.
But, the SLC girls were so impressive they ran a performance very worthy of mentioning. Senior Jenna Holland led the Dragons squad with her 17:29 guiding them to a 17:50 team average and just a 33 second 1-5 split.
Keller and Keller Timber creek tied for the second place with 94 points, with Keller winning the tie breaker 29<33.
If you think that was a heck of an effort, the SLC JV girls took things a little bit further. They put two sub 19 minute girls at the front of the pack and was followed up by eight more Carroll runners before another jersey crossed they line. They took up 16 of the top 20 overall finishers in route to their 18:48 team average and 15 point win. How's that for domination?
The boys varsity race was also blazing!
SLC senior Nate Lannen won as expected, but how does a 14:46 sound to kick start his championship season? It sounds like Lannen is ready to challenge the rest of the state for a championship. He helped lead his team to a 15:07 team average, which puts them in a legit regional and state championship challenging position.
Amidst the fast times was the element of surprise with Northwest Eaton. The Keller boys were expected to grab he runner-up position and try to get back to the state meet. But, it was Eaton who graduated some very good runners last year, but they have developed nicely throughout this season. What was impressive about them wasn't just their times, but their split from 1-4 was 14 seconds. If they can get the five spot to close the gap they could be dangerous at the Region 1 meet.
The Keller Central boys finished in third grabbing the final Region 1 qualifying spot.
In the JV Boys race, It was more evident that SLC has depth and quality keeping them relevant and ongoing in the sport.
Senior Brett Gilley won with a 15:33 time that would have won 90% of district races in the state. He was followed up by 13 consecutive teammates who crossed the finish, putting 17 runners in the top 20.
