As brother and sister, the Morris twins have shared many things. They are now set for an attempt to make history as the first siblings to win state titles at the state cross country meet in Round Rock. Graydon is currently the two-time defending champion in Class 5A cross-country while Gracie is also a gold medalist as she won the Class 5A 800-meter title in 2017.
Over their careers, it seems the two have enjoyed their success at different times. But Saturday could possibly be the moment they enjoy success at the same time.
Perhaps the region meet was a head start and a possible sign of what is to come from the Morris'. Both Graydon and Gracie won their perspective races and captured the gold medals at the Region 1-6A meet in Lubbock, last week.
Gracie ran a winning time of 17.16.5, she will be making her third trip to the state meet in as many attempts. She was injured in her junior year and did not compete in cross country. For her to win a state title, she will have to conquer some major competitors. Her main competition will come from three time defending state champion London Culbreath of McKinney North.
Other quality competitors who will be looking to win the 5A girls state title are Colleen Stegmann of Frisco Reedy, and Lovejoy freshman Amy Morefield.
Graydon kept his streak alive and won his fourth consecutive regional meet with a winning time of 14:32.3. He has a state meet winning streak as well, which he grew to two last fall. While Graydon will head into the meet as the favorite, he will also have stiff competition. El Paso Hank's duo of Michael Abeyta and Roger Rivera are both quality competitors and fearless runners. Lovejoy senior Will Muirhead is also a quality competitor.
The Morris twins are at the top of their game now have a legitimate shot to win state titles, a feat that has never happened at the UIL state championship level and have decided to continue their running career together after verbally committing to University of Texas at Austin.
