2020 Region 4-5A Girls Championships
Get buckled in for a wild ride next week! Six of the top nine schools in the most recent poll, all from regions one and two, qualified for state by virtue of lower speed rating performances than the body of work from the season suggests they are capable of. I could make a strong case for at least seven teams in the field to push for a state title! Before the race next Monday, I will publish a more nuanced take on a speed rating preview of the state meet. For now, let's look at what the data from the regions indicates.
The source for this hypothetical matchup is speed ratings from the four 5A regional meets held across Texas last week. (View the speed ratings from Region 1, Region 2, Region 3, and Region 4.) The speed ratings standardize each of the raw times from those meets to better see how the times from the relatively fast Region 2 and Region 3 races compare with the slower times from Regions 1 and 4.
