Judson Greer, Edwin Gomez Push Melissa And San Elizario Tie

It seems like just yesterday a young Edwin Gomez and Judson Greer were in their freshman seasons making big impacts on the UIL 4A scene.

Gomez was the state champ and Greer was the third place finisher that year. Since then, the two would go on to dominate the classification, state, and impact the national running scene.

Greer won three straight 4A cross country titles with yesterday's win and Gomez would be runner-up in all three of those battles.

However, yesterday, both young men would have bigger things riding on the line other than their personal races. With enough individual accomplishments to pack suitcase, the two young men have signed to run in college (Greer - University of North Carolina and Gomez - University of Texas) and it was all about the team battles. Melissa has never won a team cross country championship and San Elizario hasn't won in two years.

Greer and fellow Melissa senior Lucas Tauch (5th place - 15:55.72) led Melissa to 57 points. At the beginning of the year, Melissa believed in themselves even when nobody else thought they had much of a chance to even qualify for state let alone win.

Gomez, fellow San Elizario senior Dilan Sanchez (3rd place - 15:33.66), and sophomore Chris Moreno (7th - 16:02.54) also led their team to a 57 point total and climbed back to the top after the short hiatus.

How better fitting was it for the Greer - Gomez battle to end in a tie for the team championship to conclude their high school cross country careers. The tie breaker went to Gomez's San Elizario team who led their program back to the top and Greer's Melissa team producing the best team finish ever in Melissa history.

What a great four years these two young men have given to us to spectate!
