A returning AAU Junior Olympic Games champion in the 100 meter hurdles became one of the first recruits to make a commitment to Texas A&M University.
Jaiya Covington of Aldine Eisenhower (TX) made her pledge to the Aggies on Wednesday in a signing ceremony. This past outdoor season, she was U.S. No. 19 with a 13.89 in the 100mH and in May was ranked by MileSplit as the No. 37 recruit in the Class of 2022. She owns an all conditions personal best time of 13.19 in the 100mH.
Covington also owns personal best times of 43.69 in the 300mH and 1:10.33 in the 400mH. Her versatility extends beyond the track, too: She's cleared 5-6 in the high jump.

Last season was a big year for Covington.
Leading up to the state championships in Texas, she claimed victories at the UIL 6A District 14 Championships and the District 13-14 Area Meet. She then finished second at the Region 6A-2 Championship, which earned her an opportunity to compete at the UIL 6A Track and Field Championships in the 100mH.
In her first appearance at the state championships, Covington finished third with an all conditions time of 13.28w (+6.1) seconds.

Her level of execution in the 100mH didn't stop there. That success carried over momentum into the summer postseason. She then finished fifth at the Brooks PR Invitational, was second at the AAU Club Championships and won the high hurdles at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in a wind-legal 14.00 seconds.

This year, Covington will be the top returner from the state meet and has an opportunity to win her first individual title.
