Walker St. John is already preceded by a lore and history. The two-time UIL 5A cross country state champion won the 1,600m state championship last spring by negative splitting the second 800m and doing it with one shoe.
That's right! His shoe was pulled half way off when it was stepped on from behind, so the Grapevine star elected to kick it off and run without it. He surged to the front of the pack and and ran faster splits without it.
Well, St. John was right back at his negative splitting in the 800m at the Grapevine Mustang Relays. He roughly ran a 58 first lap split with Coppell junior Vedant Bhattacharyya right there with him.
However, the second lap is where St. John made his money and turned the race pace from solid to elite. He changed the rhythm on the second lap and dropped a 55 second split to come away with a 1:53.32 PR in the event, which was at the time the TX No. 1 time.
Bhattacharyya went on to finish second with a 1:56.38 PR.
