Cutrer goes 9:14 at The Woodlands

The 2001 State Silver Medallist, Jeff Cutrer of Nederland, used an incredible 65-second last lap to hold of Mark Walters of Clear Creek. Walters, who ran an outstanding 9:18.38, was well ahead of the pack after the first lap and lead the entire first 1600 meters. However, by the 1600-meter mark, Jeff Cutrer, Derek Yorek (Birdville), and Jon Norris (The Woodlands) were able to pull themselves back into the race, trailing Walters by only two seconds. But, with 2 laps to go Cutrer decided that it was time to leave the rest of the highly stacked field and go for the victory. "I got worried with two laps to go, I didn't know if I'd break them or not so I put the pedal to the metal and just started going," Cutrer said after the race. Cutrer's stellar 2:15 for the final 2 laps was more than enough to separate himself from Walters, Yorek, and Norris. When asked about his blistering 65-second final 400 meters, Cutrer responded, "I felt pretty confident and I knew I had enough gas in the tank. I'm pretty confident in my kick right now; it is a lot better than it was last year. I think I'm ready for anything." Klein High School dominated the 800-meter races, with Tomas Finol running 1:55.24 to win the Boys' race, and Megan and Shannon Radenmacher placed 1st and 2nd in the Girls' race in amazing times of 2:14.2 and 2:14.6. Distance powerhouses, The Woodlands and Kingwood, ran another exciting race in the Boys' Distance Medley Relay. Thanks to a 3:07 by Brian Sullivan, who was a bit under the weather, The Woodlands had a good lead going into the final leg of the race. But Jonathon Rhodes of Kingwood ran a marvelous 4:19 to catch sophomore standout, Dane Hurtubise who was running on the anchor for The Woodlands. In the Girls' 1600-meter run, Langham Creek's Brittany Brockman used a 71-second last lap to beat Brittany Sizer and Kara Campbell of Kingwood. This race saw the top 3 finishers under 5:15, including Brockman's amazing time of 5:08.9. The final showdown of the day featured Nederland's Todd Van Velson, Kingwood's Matt Munoz, Klein Oak's Steve Magness, and Birdville's Derek Yorek. Van Velson led himself and Magness through the first 3 laps in 3:15 making it a two-man race. Magness, who ran in second place the majority of the race, ran his final 400 meters in 62 seconds to beat Van Velson to the finish line in another tremendous time of 4:17.78 to Van Velson's outstanding 4:20.5. Munoz was able to overtake Yorek in the final 15 meters to capture 3rd place in a time of 4:28.27.
