Davenport Wolves Relays Wrap Up

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Davenport High School played host to a well-rounded track meet on Thursday night that featured some outstanding field results. The Harlan girls and the Davenport boys were the team champions in a meet that featured UIL 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A teams plus a TAPPS team.

Beginning with the girls high jump seems like a good place to start since Pieper's Caroline Peterson and Boerne's Kendall Lemm put on a show. Peterson was the 4A girls State Champion a year ago for the first-year Pieper program while Lemm is currently ranked #1 in 4A. Pieper moved up to 5A this year and it does not look like it will stop Peterson who cleared a State best 5-8 to top Lemm who cleared 5-6.

In the horizontal jumps it was Harlan's Iyanna Webb stealing the show. First, she won the long jump with a leap of 18-5.75 nearly two-feet better than Boerne's Savannah Seibert who was the runner-up at 16-9. Then, in the triple jump she bounded 39-0 to easily win the competition. La Vernia's Tyler Miles was second with a mark of 34-1. Webb completed her trifecta by winning the 300-meter hurdles in 45.08 and then she capped off the meet by anchoring the winning 4x400-meter relay team that clocked a time of 4:00.12.

The pole vault featured four girls clearing 10-feet or better. Zoe Breitsprecher of La Vernia won with a clearance of 10-6 while teammate Chloe McCloskey, Hannah Stanek of Harlan and Kayuki Warren of Boerne each went 10-0.

The throwing events featured Boerne's Tori Adams and Harlan's Alexis Owens. Adams showed why she is the best in San Antonio with winning throws of 44-9 in the shot put and 127-8 in the discus. Owens was second in both with marks of 37-8 in the shot put and 111-2 in the discus.

On the track, Pieper's Gentry Boykin won the 100 and 200 meters and anchored the winning 4x100-meter relay team. She ran 12.74 against a headwind in the 100 and 25.59 in the 200. She was not challenged in the 100 meters, but had to outlast teammate Mishaila Briggs and Harlan's Toryn Taylor in the 200 as each broke 26 seconds.

Kerrville Tivy's Millie Howerton dominated the 100 hurdles winning in a time of 15.41 and then came back with a solid performance in the 300 hurdles taking second place in a time of 46.13.

Harlan's Patricia Hermoso took home the 400-meter victory with a time of 58.95 while Kerrville Tivy's Madellyn Fiedler and Adelyn Kincaid took the top two spots in the 800 meters. The 1600 meters turned into a showdown between Sadie Larson of Pieper and Madeline Reagan of Davenport. The two were nearly even after three laps, but Larson was able to pull away to win in 5:17.73 with a strong final lap. Eleanor Davis of Boerne took home the win in the 3200 meters.

Host Davenport won both the 4x200 relay and the 4x800 relay. Harlan was the girls champion with 148 points and they were followed by Pieper (103), La Vernia (101), Boerne (97), and Davenport (94).

The boys meet did not feature as many top-notch performances as the girls meet, but still provided excitement. La Vernia's Davyeon Burch nearly pulled off the double winning the 100 and 200 meters. He won the 100 in 11.26 and then missed out on the 200 victory likely because he ran in the slow heat. He ran a 23.02 and lost out to Darion Brown of Davenport and TJ Butler of Harlan by less the 2/10's of a second. La Vernia's Carson Sandoval and Sebastian Reyna took second and third in the 400, respectively, despite not running in the fast heat.

In the 800 meters, it was Pieper's Noah Autry running away from the crowd to win in 2:02.15. Autry's teammate, Joaquin Flores, won the 1600 meters in a tight battle that saw 10 runners finish within 10 seconds of the winning time of 4:51.28. The 3200 meters saw Christian Pena of Davenport win without too many issues in a time of 10:03.25.

Butler won the 110-meter hurdles despite not running a clean race, but he showed his speed with a winning time of 15.26. The 300 hurdles saw Tivy senior Aidan Varwig pull out the win with a time of 41.48.

In the relays, it was Harlan winning the 4x100-meters in a time of 42.57, but they were upset in the 4x200-meters when Boerne nicked them in a time of 1:31.42. Boerne won a tightly contested 4x400 relay in 3:32.62, just ahead of Davenport, La Vernia, Tivy and Pieper.

In the jumping events, Darion Brown was the big winner. He eclipsed his school-record mark in the long jump with a winning leap of 22-10. His teammate, Gianni Evans-Williams took the triple jump with a mark of 41-4.5. The high jump had four boys clear 6-0 and Harlan's Izayah Manchester took the gold based on misses.

The throws saw Boerne go 1-2 in the shot put behind Logan Schramm (48-4.25) and Kaden Fisher (47-5). In the discus it was Pieper's Landon Ashpaugh winning with a toss of 147-11.

Only four boys competed in the pole vault and it was La Vernia's Logan Ford winning with a clearance of 12-6.

Davenport narrowly won the team title with 132 points while Harlan was second with 123. The Wolves won the meet based on their performance in the 4x400 relay. Boerne (102) was third and they were followed by Pieper (82), La Vernia (82) and Tivy (73).
