It was a hot muggy morning on the fields of Gary Job Corps. Many High School
teams and College Teams met in San Marcos for the first of two meets held at
Gary Job Corps this year. The High School Division featured Corpus Christi
Carroll, New Braunfels, Antonian, La Vernia, Luling. The College divsion
featured University of Texas, University of Texas-San Antonio, University of
Texas-Pan American, and Texas State.
The day started on a wrong note as the pace truck for the Boys 5A-4A race
followed the wrong course. The pace truck took the inner 2 mile loop inside of
the outer 3 mile loop. To everyone\'s surprise the boys came down the backstretch
in 10+ minutes as we were expecting the 16 minute range. It did not stop Corpus
Christi Carroll from dominating the race as they went 1-2-3 in the race led by
John Wenhold. They won the meet with a low score of 23 followed by New Braunfels
with 79. In the 3A-Under action La Vernia (#8 by CCCAT) upset Luling (#5 by
CCCAT). La Vernia scored 23 to Lulings 63. La Vernia was led by 1-2 finish by
Victor Castillo and Cesar Arce.
The girls race saw Anissa Angelosante (Marble Falls) continue how dominance
with a convincing 39 second victory over Sarah Hanson (Cal Allen). Sarah is one
of the favorites to make it out of Region IV 4A to state again this year. New
Braunfels Girls dominated the team race with a convincing 42 point victory. In
3A-Under action saw teammates Britany Williams and Toni Helbling duel it out
till the end for the victory. Brittany edged Toni by 5 seconds for the victory.
As in the boys 3A-Under race La Vernia dominated the team competition with 35
points.
