Alamo Heights swept the varsity team titles at their own Alamo Heights Relays on Thursday night. The boys dominated the meet with 224 points while the girls won a slightly closer competition with 160 points.
In the boys meet, the Mules won six individual events and one relay. While that is a solid number of gold medals they were able to pick up good points in nearly every event. Roosevelt finished in second place with 97 points while Marshall was third with 62 points.
Max Bacon was the top performer for Alamo Heights winning both hurdle events and running the anchor leg on the winning 4x400m relay team. In the 110mH he ran 15.56 and led a 1-2-3 showing for the Mules as teammates Jack Hollimon and James Lynch took second and third, respectively. The trio repeated the process in the 300mH with Bacon crossing the line in 40.40, one of the fastest times in San Antonio this year. In the relay, Caden Alvarado led off and was followed by Tripp Johnson and Henry Prevost before Bacon ran the final leg. They won easily in 3:31.96.
The meet started with the field events. In the long jump, Marshall swept the top three spots. Ja'won Johnson won with a leap of 21-3.75 while Lance Brown jumped 21-1.5 and Jeremiah Johnson went 20-10. Brown and Johnson also went second and third in the triple jump while John Jay's Zack Mota won with a bound of 41-5.5. Mota picked up another gold medal in the 4x100m relay where he teamed with Jayden Pritchett, Jackson Gutierrez and Jack Mota. They won from the slow hit in a time of 43.81, milliseconds ahead of Roosevelt (43.83) and Marshall (43.87). Roosevelt added big points in the shot put which was won by Jamari Galloway with a throw of 47-8 and Jeremiah Bustamante who was second with a heave of 45-10.
On the track, Edison sophomore Rene Gonzalez started the running events with a victory in the 3200m in a time of 10:15.71. He came back at the end of the meet to also win the 1600m in 4:46.99. In between those two races quite a bit happened. Pritchett won the 100m title for Jay with a time of 11.32 while Ja'won Johnson won the 200m for Marshall with a time of 23.18. Prevost won an individual crown in the 400m in addition to helping the winning 4x400m team for Alamo Heights. He won in 51.78, over a second in front of his teammate, Daniel Corso, in second place.
A third member of the Alamo Heights 4x400m team, Caden Alvarado, won the 800m in 2:04.52. It was part of a good finish for the Mules as his teammates took third and fourth.
One of the most impressive results on the track came from the Roosevelt 4x200m relay team. The group of Devin Garcia, Ivan Gaines, Brennan Carroll and James DeLuna Roosevelt easily won in 1:29.66. Carroll added a runner-up finish in the 100m.
The final gold medals of the meet went to Cole Crosley with a 6-2 clearance in the high jump and Harper Baggett who cleared 10-0 in the pole vault, both for Alamo Heights.
In the women's meet, the Mules won five events, but their overwhelming depth showed through in winning the meet. Stevens had the top scorer of the meet in Kalia Abernathy and they took second as a team with 104.5 place while Marshall was third with 78 points.
Abernathy had an amazing meet racking up five gold medals. She opened the meet by winning the long jump over Jay's Shyniece Davis, who also had a great meet. Abernathy went 17-8 while Davis finished in second with a jump of 17-4.75. She also won the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 35-7.
On the track, Abernathy anchored the winning 4x100m relay team that won in 50.46. She was joined on the team by Trinity Young, Andra Stokes and Mariah Farris. In the 4x200m relay, Abernathy received the baton with a slight lead and extended it around the final curve and then she held off Marshall. Stokes and Farris were also on the team and the only change from the 4x100 unit was Giselle Valencia running the lead leg. They finished in 1:49.18 while Marshall crossed in 1:49.78.
Abernathy's final event was the 200m. She won the first heat in 26.63 and she had to hold her breath as Davis was in the third heat and ran 26.68 to take second place. Davis also won the 100m in 12.93 and the 400m in 58.93 giving her 36 points while Abernathy had 40 points.
Alamo Heights picked up a pair of victories in the field events. Laney Crowell won the high jump with a clearance of 5-2 and the Mules went 1-2-3 in the event. In the pole vault, Kennedy Veale took top honors with a height of 9-6. The only other field event was the shot put that was dominated by Roosevelt. They took the top three spots and it was Ava Ruiz winning with a throw of 31-4.5.
Alamo Heights dominated the distance events. Avery Brawner led the way as she won both the 1600m and 3200m. She ran 5:46.03 in the 1600m and was followed by teammates Katie Allison and Micah Monteleone. In the 3200m, Brawner won in 12:22.03 and Allison was runner-up again in 12:37.83. Monteleone added another runner-up finish in the 800m.
The 800m ended up being controlled by freshmen. In addition to Monteleone finishing in second place, a pair of Southwest freshmen took first and third. Mayra Medina won in 2:28.73 while Peyton Elwood was third in 2:35.80.
In the 100mH, Stevens picked up a sixth victory as a team. Sophomore Nizeria Nandung edged out MacArthur's Kari Amadi by .06 seconds with a time of 17.54.
The 300mH saw an unusual occurrence with the JV time being better than the winning varsity time. Alamo Heights freshman Ruby Carter won the JV race in 51.83 while her fellow freshman, Reyna Hull, won the varsity race for the Mules in 52.61.
The final event of the proceedings featured the Southwest 4x400m relay team of Lillian Covarrubias, Serenity Diaz, Deborah Alele and Medina winning in 4:16.82.
