Elijah Ferguson (Katy Mayde Creek) got his 400m season kick started this weekend at the Carl Lewis Invitational. Last week in College Station at the A&M, he showcased his sprint speed by going 6.83 and 6.88 in two 60m races. This week, he is stepping up in distance to competed in his primary event, the 400m.
Last night, the 400m preliminary rounds were held at the University of Houston, that is where Ferguson exerted that 6.83 speed over the course of two full laps. His time of 47.04 ranks him No. 2 in Texas and the third best performer nationally, in the early stages of the 2025 indoor track and field season.
With that performance on Thursday night, the Katy Mayde Creek senior earned himself a position in Saturday's 400m finals at the Carl lewis Invitational. That will give him the opportunity to press for the top mark in the country.
This year, Ferguson could have his eyes set on the Texas UIL 6A state championship. As a sophomore, in 2023, he finished fourth at the state meet in Austin, Texas and last season, he improved into medal position, taking third place overall. Time wise, in 2024, Ferguson ended the year with personal bests of 21.77 in the 200m and 46.18 in the 400m.
