Alex Alvarez cross the finish line at the 2024 Region 4-6A Championships
It wasn't long before everybody was aware of last year's outstanding freshman Ruel Newberry from Denton Guyer. His stats were some of the best nationally by any freshman boy ever.
It was a very good freshman boys class throughout the entire state. A total of 16 boys turned in 5,000m performances 16:00 or better in the 2024 cross country season.
One of them was Eagle Pass frosh Alex Alvarez. Alvarez was the sixth best performer over 5K in the class as he turned in a 15:47.90 PR last fall.
He had a big impact on the overall Eagle Pass team as he helped them finish sixth at the UIL 4-6A Regional Championships and were just 55 points away from reaching the state meet as a squad.
Even though Alvarez was not able to get to Round Rock with his teammates, he did qualify individually. He finished 19th in Corpus Christi and was the top finisher in his classification and eventually was 84th at state.
The start to the sophomore season is on deck for Alvarez and we'll get see how this year will start. He went 16:23 and 16:19 in his first two races. On the track, he went season bests of 4:31 and 9:36.
As the sixth best returning freshman from last year and the ninth best overall finisher from last year's Region 4-6A race, look for Alvarez to play another important part this cross country season.
