In 2024, Maya Easterwood proved she was more than just a talented runner. While basketball remained her primary sport, she carved out enough time for training to emerge as one of the state's most promising distance athletes.
Early in the season, she found herself toe-to-toe with defending state champion Macy Wingard, pushing the veteran star through the first three weeks of competition. That trial by fire only sharpened Easterwood, who went on to establish herself as a force across one of Texas' toughest classifications and regions. By season's end, the Coppell two-sport standout had earned all-state honors and cemented her status as one of the top challengers in UIL 6A.
Her track season was brief but impactful. Easterwood used the championship stretch to gain enough form and confidence to qualify for the state meet in Region 1-6A, an achievement that underscored her versatility and grit.
Fast forward to this past weekend, and Easterwood wasted no time in reminding the state of her talent. In her season opener at the Marcus Coach T Invitational, the junior turned the race into a runaway. By the one-mile mark, she had already opened a 20-second lead, and the gap only widened with each split. Clocking 5:13, 5:40, and 6:12, she averaged 5:30 per mile to stop the clock at 17:06-a new state-leading time and a commanding statement to start the year.
