The Canyon boys cross country team gave the state insight to their 2025 season capabilities on one of the biggest stages in Texas distance running-the Marcus Coach T Invitational. While their 14th-place team finish might not reflect the dominance we've come to expect from the three-time defending UIL 4A state champions, the bigger story is that Canyon still looks every bit the part of a team capable of making it four in a row.

A Championship Pedigree
Canyon entered the year as the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas (CCCAT) UIL 4A preseason No. 1 and retained that position in the first regular-season poll. That ranking is well-earned: the Eagles have won the last three 4A state titles (2022, 2023, 2024) and established themselves as the gold standard for the classification.
At Coach T, the field was packed with the very best from across all UIL levels, including top-10 6A and 5A programs. For Canyon, the day was more about testing themselves against the state's elite than chasing a result in the standings.

Bright Spots Up Front
Even without their full roster, Canyon showcased firepower at the top.
-
Domenic San Miguel was outstanding, placing 6th overall in 15:08 against many of the state's premier 6A and 5A athletes.
-
Teammate Noah Cooper wasn't far behind, clocking 15:11 for 8th place, giving Canyon two low sticks that would rival nearly any team in Texas.
Those performances not only reaffirmed Canyon's front-end strength but also showed that San Miguel and Cooper are ready to anchor another state-title run.

Running Shorthanded
Circumstances kept Canyon from competing at full strength. Only five boys crossed the finish line, leaving no room for depth or displacement. Several of the team's top returning runners with state championship experience did not race, a factor that heavily impacted the final scoreline.
The result was a 438-point total and a 16:17 average, numbers that clearly don't reflect Canyon's true ability. With a full lineup, the Eagles' team profile looks far more like the juggernaut that has dominated 4A in recent years.

Perspective Moving Forward
For Canyon, the takeaway isn't about the 14th-place finish-it's about the season ahead. The Eagles have always sharpened themselves by racing against larger schools early in the year, using those experiences to peak in November. This meet was simply part of that process.
With San Miguel and Cooper setting the tone up front, and with the return of the rest of their seasoned lineup, Canyon remains in prime position to defend its title. Their ability to regroup, reload, and deliver when it matters most is what has defined their dynasty-and nothing from this weekend suggests otherwise.
Bottom Line: The scoreboard at Coach T may not have shown Canyon on top, but the ingredients of a fourth straight UIL 4A state championship are still firmly in place. Once they're at full strength, the Eagles will once again be the team everyone in 4A has to chase.
