Region 4 boys battle for the lead in Corpus Christi
The UIL 1A Boys Regional Championships took place this past week at three different sites across Texas, each offering distinct course layouts and environmental conditions that shaped the outcome of the races. Though every athlete competed over the same 5,000-meter distance, the variety in terrain, from the dry, rolling plains of Lubbock and the coastal humidity of Corpus Christi to the flatter, faster surface in Arlington, meant no two regional meets were alike.
The weather added another layer of complexity. Some races were run in brisk, cool temperatures ideal for distance running, while others faced heat in the 80s and 90s, or stiff winds that tested endurance and strategy. These factors made direct comparisons between regions nearly impossible. Still, every course saw impressive efforts, tactical races, and standout performances.
In the recap that follows, we highlight the top teams and individuals from each regional meet, not to compare results across sites, but to recognize the excellence and grit displayed by athletes statewide, each competing under their own unique race-day conditions.
The individual race at Region 1-2A was fast from the gun, with Ismael Pizano of Smyer running away with the title in a blazing 16:32.50. Pizano, who was not on a qualifying team, secured his return to the state meet with the fastest time of the day. Behind him, Christian Sanchez (Plains) and Chase Schumm (Ropesville Ropes) crossed in 17:02 and 17:05, respectively, also securing individual berths to Round Rock.
Though Gruver's runners didn't place in the top 5 individually, their 7th and 8th-place finishes by Gustavo Quintana and Cesar Trejo set the tone for their eventual team title. Other top individual qualifiers included Jordan Rodriguez (Big Lake Reagan County), Josiah Lopez (Farwell), and Maddox Ortiz (Spearman), all finishing under 17:35.

Region 1-2A Boys XC Championship Recap - Lubbock
The team competition in Region 1-2A was one of the most tightly contested across the state.
-
Gruver won the regional title convincingly with 82 points and an average time of 18:15.60. Their pack running was strong, with their 1-5 split just over 1:11.
-
Sonora earned the runner-up spot with 144 points. Despite having two top-15 finishes, their third through fifth runners placed just high enough to keep them ahead of the chasing teams.
-
Sundown and Eldorado engaged in a thrilling battle for third and fourth. Sundown edged out Eldorado by one point (179 to 180), thanks in part to strong third and fourth runners. His brother, Juan Tinoco, followed closely in second at 16:42.10, giving Bosqueville a powerful 1-2 punch, though the school did not qualify as a team. Isaiah Smith from Collinsville, the highest-placing runner from a qualifying team, placed third in 16:55.70, anchoring his squad's title bid.

The top 10 was filled out by a mix of runners from both team contenders and individual qualifiers, such as Chance Stewart (Albany), Hudson Kelly (Alvord), and Austin Skiles (Lipan).
Ten individual runners from non-qualifying teams punched their ticket to Round Rock. This group featured seasoned seniors and rising underclassmen, with times packed tightly under 18:10, proving the depth and competitiveness of this region.

Region 2-2A Boys XC Championship Recap - Arlington
The team competition was a thrilling battle between Collinsville and Windthorst, with Collinsville narrowly capturing the regional title by just 9 points. Led by senior Isaiah Smith, Collinsville tallied 82 points with a tight scoring pack and an average time of 18:03. Windthorst was right on their heels at 91 points, with their own strong front-runners in Messineo and Zicarelli, averaging 18:04.
Slidell grabbed third place with 94 points, staying close in contention thanks to consistent finishes across their top five. The final state-qualifying spot went to Whitewright, who scored 131 points and edged out Lipan (142 points), thanks to a more compact team spread and a stronger finish at the 4-5 runner positions.
Lipan, though missing out on team advancement, had two runners, Austin and Ryan Skiles, to qualify individually, highlighting their program's talent even in the face of a deep team field.
Overall, the Region 2-2A team race was one of the tightest in the state, with the top three teams separated by just 12 points. With such competitive depth, the advancing squads will arrive in Round Rock tested and ready for the state stage.

The individual title was claimed by Adrian Ramirez of Tenaha, who cruised through the 5K course in 16:27.2, using a strong final mile to separate himself from the rest of the field. Right behind him was Caddel Keeling of Centerville (16:45.4), who also showed veteran poise in managing a fast early pace.
Raul Munoz of New Summerfield (17:11.5) and Matthew Hawkins of team champion Riesel (17:25.3) rounded out the top four, both critical to their respective team's top finishes.
Although the top four teams automatically qualified their runners for state, 10 additional individuals earned state berths by placing among the top finishers outside of the qualifying teams. Among these standout efforts was David Perez of Frost, who ran a blazing 17:36.1 to finish 5th overall. Not far behind, David Villanueva of Corsicana Mildred and Gabriel Constante of Groveton also broke into the top 10, securing individual state spots.

Region 3-2A Boys XC Championship Recap - Huntsville
The team battle in Region III-2A was tight through the top three spots. Riesel emerged as the regional champion with a score of 53 points, led by a compact 5-runner spread and a team average of 18:22.3. All five scorers finished in the top 16, giving them a commanding lead.
New Summerfield placed second with 73 points, anchored by Raul Munoz's podium finish and supported by two other runners in the top 10. Their average time of 18:32.7 kept them comfortably ahead of third-place Centerville, who finished just behind at 81 points despite having the individual runner-up in Keeling.
The race for the final state-qualifying team spot was less dramatic, as Tenaha, led by the individual champion Ramirez, took fourth with 155 points. Their strength at the top helped them overcome a large gap between their top runner and the rest of their scoring group.
These four teams now advance to the UIL State Cross Country Championships in Round Rock, where they'll face elite competition from across the state.
