Cara Sims leads the 2A girls' race at the 2025 UIL State Championships

The final division to be covered in this installment of the UIL State Championship, the 2A Girls race kicked off at 10:55 to perfect racing weather and a well-broken-in course from a full weekend of racing. 

Heading into this race, Cara Sims of Elysian Fields came in as the heavy favorite and defending champion from last year's race. She's run incredibly well over both 3200m and 5000m this year, and the recently committed to the Texas Longhorns came into Round Rock in great form. 

On the team side, Hamilton aimed to secure their fourth straight title while teams like Gruver, Port Aransas, and Coleman all looked like potential state title contenders. 

As predicted, Cara Sims held the lead through the first split by a comfortable five seconds in 5:19, while the gap continued to become more pronounced in the following 400m after she came through the split. 

On the team side, Hamilton held the lead with 59 points over Culver, who sat in second with 99 points. Clarendon held third with 150 points to round out the top three. 

Sims only increased her lead over the final mile, gapping the field to win another state title in 11:13.80. She won the race by 17 seconds over Isa McGinnis, who finished second in a time of 11:30.20. 

Leah Depiper took the final spot on the podium in 11:44.80 while Yaria Deleon followed in fourth in 11:51.70. 

The team title gap stayed virtually the same over the final mile, with Hamilton securing their fourth consecutive state title with 65 points over Gruver, who finished second with 103. Hamilton was carried by a strong presence in the top ten, with three low sticks making them virtually unbeatable. 

Douglass rounded out the podium with 146 points, 3 ahead of Clarendon, who finished fourth with 149.
