NXR South Girls Team Recap: Flower Mound, Bridgeland Advance

- - -

The anticipation surrounding the NXR South Girls Championship was at its highest in years, with Flower Mound entering as a perennial power, advancing to the last several consecutive NXN Championships, but facing an energized and confident Bridgeland squad fresh off its historic UIL 6A state title.

From the gun, it became clear that Flower Mound was determined to reassert its dominance. Through the 1-mile split, the Jaguars held only the third-best team standing with 121 points, trailing Rogers' aggressive opening (103 pts) and Bridgeland's disciplined early tempo (111 pts). However, once the field settled in past the mile marker, Flower Mound made its major move. Using the strength of Adeline Bennett (17:21) and Liana Cluley-Garza (17:44), they surged to the front at 2 miles, grabbing a commanding 82-point total, the lowest of any team at any checkpoint all day. Their 2-mile scoring line of 3-4-14-28-33 showed just how tightly they packed their top five in the race's critical middle third.

Bridgeland, meanwhile, held steady in second throughout the race, matching Flower Mound's composure even as the gaps widened. Their 1-mile score (111 pts) shifted only slightly to 98 at two miles before settling at 89 points at the finish, powered by the relentless trio of Rowan Saacke (18:00), Susana Rawls (18:03), and Alexandra Montgomery (18:12), the most stable top-three grouping of any of the contenders. What Flower Mound gained with a devastating move at 2 miles, Bridgeland countered with consistency, staying within the top two at every split and ultimately securing the second NXN auto-bid, which was big after missing last year by one point.

Behind them, the race for third unfolded dramatically. The Katy squad started aggressively, sitting fourth at both the 1-mile (169 points) and 2-mile (162 points) marks, but they also closed the strongest of the non-qualifiers, finishing with 160 points, the meet's third-best score. Their pack of Vienna Fish (18:01), followed by tightly bunched teammates, nearly cut the deficit to Bridgeland but couldn't match the Bears' low-stick strength. Meanwhile, Rogers (AR) had the most dramatic shift of any team. They opened the race stunningly with the lowest 1-mile score in the entire field (103 points) behind a red-hot start from Lilly Beshears (17:21), but their wide spread, eventually the highest among top teams at 2:18, made it difficult to maintain position as the race intensified. Rogers slid to third at the 2-mile split (123 pts) and ultimately finished fourth (163 points), just three points behind Katy. Bentonville rounded out the top five with 208 points, unable to close the gap created in the opening stages.

In the end, Flower Mound's combination of experience, resiliency, and an overwhelming middle-mile push secured yet another regional title, while Bridgeland's season-long consistency paid off in the form of their first-ever NXN team berth.

Katy, Rogers, and Bentonville all battled bravely and remained competitive through different phases of the race, but the day belonged to Flower Mound's decisive mid-race takeover and Bridgeland's unwavering composure start to finish.
