Carrie Cresser Wins Texas HS Indoor Girls' 400m In 55.19

Texas High School Indoor Championship 2026

The girls' 400 meters at the Texas High School Indoor Championships delivered exactly what fans hoped for in the opening weekend of the season: depth, competitiveness, and early proof that Texas's long sprint talent remains among the best in the country. While not an official championship meet, the race carried championship-level quality, producing fast times across multiple heats and signaling that several athletes entered the season already in midseason form.

The event opened with heat one, where Maya Wafford set the tone by winning her section in 56.66, becoming the first Texas high school athlete to break the tape in a 400 during the 2026 indoor season. As the heats progressed, the pace steadily dropped, culminating in a thrilling showdown in heat two. There, Carrie Cresser and Jaden Small showcased exactly why they were pegged as two of the top quarter-milers to watch entering the meet. Cresser executed a composed, powerful race to take the overall win in 55.19, the fastest time of the meet, while Small, a University of Arkansas signee, stayed close throughout to finish second in 55.47.

Behind the top two, the race remained tightly contested. Katelyn Wattell claimed third in 55.74, followed closely by ATL Zoom,'s Sydney Sherrod in 55.84, who continued to impress as an underclassman competing against a veteran field. Hannah Barr and Mya Harris crossed the line nearly together in 55.91 and 55.92, respectively, underscoring just how narrow the margins were throughout the final. Mary Anne Schattner, Maya Wafford, Ella Hang, and Samantha Ivey rounded out the top 10, all contributing to a meet where 19 girls dipped under 58 seconds, an impressive statistic for the first full weekend of competition.

With strong early-season fitness, tactical racing, and a deep pool of contenders, the girls' 400 meters at the Texas High School Indoor Championships set a high standard for the rest of the indoor campaign and reaffirmed the Lone Star State's strength in the quarter mile.
