Eguonome Akpobassa wins the girls' long jump in College Station
The girls' long jump and triple jump events at the Texas High School Indoor Championships belonged to Eguonome Akpobassa, who delivered one of the most dominant double performances of the weekend at Texas A&M University.
The action began Friday in the long jump, where Akpobassa wasted little time making history. On her second attempt, the Bridgeland senior soared out to 6.22 meters (20-5), breaking both the meet and facility records and immediately separating herself from an already elite field.
That mark eclipsed the previous standard of 6.18m and set the tone for a competition that saw five girls clear 19 feet, an extraordinary level of depth for an indoor meet. Akpobassa backed up the record jump with additional marks over 19-7, showing consistency to match the headline distance. Behind her, Madison Cuplin, Kendal Godfrey, Cate Bryant, and Lauren Carrothers all surpassed the 19-foot barrier, each producing season-opening performances that would have won most meets outright, but instead underscored just how special the competition was.

Akpobassa returned Saturday with unfinished business in the triple jump, and once again she delivered. Opening confidently, she worked her way into rhythm before unleashing a winning jump of 12.34 meters (40-6), completing a rare horizontal sweep and confirming her status as one of the premier jumpers in the country.
The win didn't come without resistance, as Carrothers (39-7¾) and Cuplin (39-1¼) pushed the standard past 39 feet, while a tightly packed chase group filled out the rest of the top 10 with multiple jumps beyond 37 feet.
Still, Akpobassa's combination of power, control, and composure stood apart. By the end of the weekend, she had not only rewritten the record book in the long jump but also asserted clear dominance in the triple jump, making her performance one of the defining highlights of the Texas High School Indoor Championships and an early benchmark for the 2026 season.
