The Boys High Jump Was Center Stage At TX HS Championships

The boys' high jump at the 2026 Texas High School Indoor Championships delivered one of the most compelling technical battles of the meet, blending proven state-level experience with a breakthrough performance at the top. Entering the competition, much of the attention centered on Micah Lockett, the UIL 5A state champion, Nike Outdoor Nationals runner-up, and the only jumper in the field with a career clearance over 7 feet. To add to that, he was the facility record holder in the event with his 6-8 win last year.

Alongside him was Brody Garcia, last year's UIL 5A state runner-up, setting the stage for what many expected to be a two-man showdown. Instead, it was Allen senior Ryan Janak who emerged as the difference-maker, claiming victory with a clutch personal-best clearance of 6-11¾ (2.13m).

Janak and Garcia were flawless through the early heights, both clearing 6-4, 6-6, and 6-8 on their first attempts. Lockett, meanwhile, spent much of the early competition searching for rhythm in his season opener, recording two misses at 6-6 and another at 6-8, forcing him to lean on his experience to stay alive. When the bar rose to 6-9¾, Lockett and Garcia responded immediately, each clearing on their first jump and applying pressure to Janak, who missed twice before finally clearing on his third attempt. That clearance proved pivotal, resetting the competition and sending all three jumpers to 6-11¾ with everything on the line.

At that height, Janak rose to the occasion. While Garcia and Lockett were unable to convert, Janak cleared 6-11¾ on his first attempt, securing the win and delivering the biggest jump of his career and a new facility record. With the title in hand, he pushed the bar to 7-2½, giving the crowd three spirited attempts before the competition concluded. Garcia and Lockett finished second and third at 6-9¾, while the rest of the elite field filled out a deep results list with multiple athletes clearing 6-4 or better.

By the end of the day, the event not only crowned a new indoor champion but also signaled that the Texas boys' high jump scene is primed for an exciting season ahead.
