Although she "only" managed 38-3 on Saturday, Jordan Rand ranks as the state's top triple jumper with a season-best mark of 38-0. Photos by Alan Versaw.
There isn't enough time to do quite the same detailed meet-by-meet review I usually do here, but a few comments are still in order.
First, what a difference a little warmth makes! The state leader boards were almost entirely rewritten this week in almost every event.
Triple jumps, in particular, had a very good week. Just ask Trey Richardson, Tyree Deas, Graham Gilliland, Cameron Carter, and Jordan Rand.
Michael Cernoia had a sensational weekend at the John Tate Challenge Cup, winning the 1600 in 4:26, the 3200 in 9:47, and just barely missing the 800 to Dusty Solis as both finished in just a hair over 1:57.
Speaking of the Challenge Cup, that meet can still draw the numbers to venerable Dutch Clark Stadium. Nearly 1000 athletes participated in the meet despite the fact that schools are limited to two entries per event.
The Mullen Runners Roost produced its usual share of sensational marks. If you take a quick look at the national rankings, Vanessa Fabrizio, Emily LaValley, and Eleanor Fulton all rank in the top 10 nationally at 800 meters. Eleanor Fulton is in the top 10 nationally in the 1600 even without an altitude adjustment. If altitude adjustments were given, as they are at the NCAA level, Kaitlin Hanenburg would be in the top 10 nationally as well. Jenna Adams goes into the top 20 in the pole vault. Speaking of Jenna Adams, the little game of cat-and-mouse with the state pole vault lead continues. Adams went 12-1 this weekend to up the state-leading standard by a half-inch. Kenny Chambers jumps into the nation's top 20 in the 200 with his mark from Mullen. It was a decent meet.
And, speaking of altitude conversions, Niwot's David Perry ran 4:18 for the 1600 at Longmont on Saturday. Converted, that would be a national top 10 time as well.
When the weather warms up a little, the performances heat up.
